Wow, a Gopher Snake. Great find and cool shots. Take care of it. Its favorite food is rodents and just by being there will reduce the mouse population, not counting the one it eats.
I'm on the east coast so I believe it's an Eastern Garter Snake. Only about 18" to 24". Hard to get an accurate estimate when he was rather curled up. Unfortunately they eat frogs and toads along with insects, worms and slugs and such. We had a long talk about what he was to eat and not eat. As long as he leaves the frogs and toads alone he is welcome to stay. He's also more than welcome to eat a vole or 2 anytime he wants.
