I have a canon EOS 850D and I am wanting a telephoto lens for close up bird watching but I don't want to break the bank. Any suggestions. Thanks!
If you are just "watching" consider a really good pair of binoculars, like canon image stabilized. If you want more power, consider a Swarovski spotting scope (but they are pricey too). Others will tell you about camera lenses.
should be able to pick up a Sigma 150-600 at a reasonable price.
Look at the EF 70-300 IS II, used or new. Longer than that is heavier and more expensive, and less useful for other general purposes.
Tamron 150-600 G2 version. Around $1400 weather sealed and 6 year warranty.
I use a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary that I bought from mpb for a reasonable price with my Z8 and D7500. Check out my bird photos.

To be more specific - Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II Nano USM
150/600 tamron g2 or a sigma .new or used .

Canon 400mm f5.6 L used ....lighter and cheaper than the big zooms - also sharper ! ....more reach than the 70-300 IS II - but no IS - ideal is to have BOTH ! Both used about $900 if you shop.

Canon image stabilized binoculars are truly amazing. A favorite thing to do on my trips to Yellowstone is to let kids look through them when wildlife has been spotted.
The Tamron 18-400 has been a favorite walk around lens for me light weight and versatile, the image quality is not as good as the 100-400 was on my 7Dmk2 but image quality isn't always critical. In fact, I liked that lens so much I bought the Sony a6600 and now the a6700 so I could use it (adapted EF to Sony E) that setup is on that camera 95% of the time. On my morning hikes although with all the birds coming north, I have had the 150-600 on for better image quality should I see an uncommon bird migrating through. Find a new or used one fast as Tamron no longer makes them.
While it may not be for perfectionists, a very portable solution is a bridge camera. While I have a Tamron 150-600 G2 lens, I often go to my SX50 HS for a long shot.
I use a Tamron 150-600 g2 lens. Price about $1,400, focus is tack sharp, weather sealed

I like my Tamron 105-600 G2. Think better reviews from sigma early model
My go to lens is a 18-400 Tamron. It gives me the most options. It is a lot smaller and when at Airshows I don’t have make lens changes for close ups and the airplanes flying and taking a chance of getting dirt on the sensor. I know. This is a bit long winded, but the same is with bird photos sometimes they land close and sometimes not so close.
