A cell phone is great until the spammers get your number. I finally got the AT&T to stop them, but I still get several calls a day, not marked spam, with a number and just a location. I tried to get AT&T to send those to voice mail as well, but it hasn't worked so far.

I have a Pixel 7 Pro phone and subscribe to GoogleFi and it screens my calls for me. It has been exceptionally effective in identifying spam calls and for those calls that it cannot immediately identify as spam it asks the caller why they are calling and to leave a message. Spammers never leave a message and just hang up. Those people who really need to talk with me will leave me a message. The system has not failed me yet!

"I took a picture back in 2010 showing people walking up Edinburgh's Royal Mile with not one cell phone in sight - they were actually smiling and talking to one-another!!"

I wonder if the same would be true if you were to take a photo of Edinburgh's Royal Mile today? I would bet not but your point is taken. So much has changed since 2010. Some things have changed for the good, but some changes have not been so great. Just like any other period in Earth's history.

Not only does everyone have their noses buried in cell phones but I've seen tourists holding up Kindles and tablets and taking pictures with them - it's totally ridiculous!! Here's an example of people more interested in their cell phones than the classical artwork surrounding them - sheesh!!

Karl Marx was the author of the saying” Religion is the opiate of the masses”. Today, that is no longer the case. Today, it is the cell phone that is the opiate of the masses. It boggles my old mind how these people cannot put down their devices to walk, drive, or eat. It’s is just amazing to me, and I hesitate to see how much worse it can get.

Not sure it is the cell phone or still the TV. Probably a toss up.

It's a part of mankind...part of the same pattern.

Mankind is terrible at determining convenience vs cost.

We...as a species...do this with everything.

Religion included...as is everything else.

We always grab at the rose, forgetful of the thorns.

I always answer the phone even back in the 70's, even if I know it's spam. I don't want to miss an important call.

That's why there are answering machines, voice mail, and caller ID. Protect yourself from spam and scams.

Then of course, there are those folks who text and surf while watching tv!

You either roll with the times or not. I happen to use the hell out of my cell phone...and attached camera...and many apps, especially pertaining to driving, weather or photography. Life in the foodchain, folks. <shrug>I think it's unfair (and supremely unaware) to accuse those who may sit down at an art gallery to text a friend how cool the show is, or answer a text from a loved one, or whatever, of being some kind of sub-human. You take advantage of and use tools or not...the benefits are there to be had.

When I said important calls I meant when I got to the voice mail it would be too late.

Once when my mother and I were at a doctors office, we were the only ones not holding a phone. There were about 7-8 people in the room with us. When my brother and I were in a waiting room at an NTB (National tire and Brake) we were the only ones not looking at a phone. I have one but seldom ever look at it except to make a call to Time and Temperature. I feel like an alien that has been dropped off among earthlings.

It is the new age of the Dinosaurs, don't live on my phone. Frontier wants us to change to Wahoo, Wahoo does not like my Frontier password so they won't allow the change. Don't text either, so another reason Wahoo won't allow the change. Feel like dinosaur, fading away, can't keep up with modern communications. Will soon be extinct.
