This actually happened in Lake Havasu AZ. Although McCullough wasn't a politician per se, but he did build a bridge in the desert, then dug a channel under it.
These are funny, but sadly true.

That would be the London Bridge. It was taken apart in London and the pieces numbered and shipped to Havasu and re-assembled!
