I was testing my new copy stand setup this week, and decided to scan some negatives from the summer before my senior year in high school.

These are from 35mm Tri-X exposed on July 4, 1972. Travelers Rest was a tiny little town then, but they had a lot of holiday spirit. It proved to be a hoot. They had all sorts of traditional 7/4 "cultural exhibits," eating contests, and activities including the greased "flag pole" with a $100 bill on top. Unfortunately, I had made about 15 exposures and had to leave because my friend got sick. These are some of the best:

In my teens, I went to various events with my camera and photographed what interested me. Fourth of July events in SC were guaranteed to bring out an interesting amalgam of humanity. Rock concerts in the park brought out an entirely different, less homogenous blend of people. I'm just starting to digitize all my negatives from 1971-72. I know there are some fun scenes there.

When I do any sort of revisiting of old work like this, EVERYTHING comes back in a flood of memories. Sometimes it is overwhelming.

Photography has a way of reminding us of who we are, where we came from, why we changed, why we stayed, why we left. That became apparent to me at an early age, when I discovered my parents' high school yearbooks as a sixth grader, and went through them. Three years later, I was on a yearbook staff, clicking away with a borrowed camera, and souping them in my own darkroom.

Last year, for my 50th high school reunion, I put together a video of over 840 images from my senior year in high school. I was the primary candid photographer for our yearbooks for four years. I have saved all my film, anticipating such a project might be possible in 2023. My negatives from the three prior years are still awaiting attention. I was more prolific as an underclassman.
