If I am busy, I ignore mine when it rings. If it's important, they will call back like they did in the good old days OR leave a message.

Exactly!!!

I’d be more inclined to say that government is the opiate of the masses.

What does it do to you? You miss the pay phone?

I'm 84. When I was working the farm, the smartphone was an essential tool. Not only did it show me the weather radar when I needed a forecast, I used it for keeping track of irrigation zones and orders. The camera was useful for documentation. I was not tempted by social media or browsing the web. It was a utility item.

The problem isn't the phone. It's the user habits.

Because we no longer have Pay Phones/Phone Booths, cell phones are a source of security. Should have one on case of an emergency.

"Should have one on case of an emergency."

I agree. Cell phones are very useful in a variety of situations.

Karl Marx was the author of the saying” Religion is the opiate of the masses”. Today, that is no longer the case. Today, it is the cell phone that is the opiate of the masses. It boggles my old mind how these people cannot put down their devices to walk, drive, or eat. It’s is just amazing to me, and I hesitate to see how much worse it can get.

Which redefines Hell. What is Hell? "I can't get any reception down here!!!!"

Wife has a smart phone. I have a smartphone as well and a flip phone. We use the navigation maps on the smartphone quite a bit as well as other purposes including my hearing aids. The flip phone I got to replace the home phone as it is about half the price per month. I also give out that number when needed to in cases where I feel they will use it to give me useless info or try to sell me something. Also as a backup due to health issues.

I have one but frequently forget it and go out, leaving it on the charger.

One thing i HATE is that so many people would prefer to text instead of talk. I like the exchange that happens quickly in a voice conversation.

Texting causes a conversation to drag on forever and you can't hear the tones and inflections in a person's voice.

I like cell phones and the internet but I could do without social media (which is the real problem).
