I always prefer a camera on a strap and on my shoulders. I feel it is safe and convenient too.
I have seen some carry the camera even DSLRs in their hand when on a shoot.
Which do you prefer?

DLSR in hand with supplied strap wrapped around me somewhere.
Lightweight lens for easy carry.

My primary shooting involves birds and hand-held long lenses. As I meander through the swamps, my camera is on a Black Rapid cross-body strap attached to the lens foot. The height is set so that my right hand can also hold the lens foot. Very easy to swing the rig into shooting position.

In the wetlands you have to be ready to take an image in a nano second. That's why I hand hold my equipment.
With IBIS there is no longer a need for a tripod, especially if it is in the lens and body.
Luck favors the prepared. My camera's are pre set for birds in flight so I just lift and shoot, what could be easier.

Yes - even back in the day when I was shooting weddings with my D3S.

Depends on the shoot and what lens I'm using.

I always use an OP/TECH USA Cross Body Quick Adjust Camera Strap without the logo and rest my hand on the camera while walking.
This strap allows the camera to be brought to my eye in one motion ready to shoot.
It has a cut-resistant cable running through it and I can step through it or place it in my lap while eating and for anti-theft security.
OP/TECH products are a great value for the $ spent, and that makes me . . .

I don't like a strap around my neck as it adds additional stress on my already achy neck. For the last ten years or so I use a Spider holster combined with a wrist strap. It shifts the weight to my hips and legs and I can walk for hours without any stress. When the camera is attached to the belt I usually keep my hand/arm on the camera to prevent bumping. My hands are free until the camera is needed and detached in a moment and, with the strap on, I'm ready to shoot. When finished it clips back on the belt in a moment. Very convenient!

Neck strap, usually cross-body when moving, to the front when shooting.

Thank you for the valuable inputs on how do you hold your camera.
Quick accessibility and camera safety have been described very well.
Thank you.
