Well, well, well.
I'm 71 but have no cell phone either.
Still have a landline.

Because I don't have a cell phone, I lost use of PayPal a while back.
A few companies have demanded their customer's cell phone number to use their services.
Then they wised up.

I'm 84. When I was working the farm, the smartphone was an essential tool. Not only did it show me the weather radar when I needed a forecast, I used it for keeping track of irrigation zones and orders. The camera was useful for documentation. I was not tempted by social media or browsing the web. It was a utility item.

The problem isn't the phone. It's the user habits.

AMEN! A tool is a tool. Its up to the person to be the craftsman with it.

There are other elements in society that realize we can be controlled by such devices either unknowingly, subconciously or voluntarily.

I have seen that statement played out in real time at a "Occupy Wallstreet" protest in downtown LA. A former colleague of mine is a high level "hacker". The crazy protesters were marching and all using their smart phones for directions. My friend was able to create thousands of "bots" to direct the marchers down a street and right to the law enforcement security line. The protesters were subsequently squelched. Dumbasses. Game over. LOL

They're good for flying drones and for emergencies. Pretty much that's it.

"Put pay phones back on street corners and carry a pocket full of quarters."

And don't forget to carry a bottle of disinfectant and a repair kit to deal with the vandalism to the pay phones.

And the used needles stuffed in to the coin return slots for fun.

I quite agree with you. A number of years ago the wife and I was eating lunch in a cafe a observed a couple each reading a book while they ate we commented on how they could be doing that- now 30+ years later it is not uncommon to see 75% of customers doing something on a cel phone.

I am also 75, I have two of them, one is because I have a pace maker. What the second one is used for I have no idea, it stays plugged in and I have not moved it in almost two years. The other one I used to make calls but mostly it is useless to me. I have trouble understand most people on that phone, pretty much a useless toy.

When you say you have two of them, do you mean two cell phones or two landlines?

My cell phone connects with my hearing aids via bluetooth. Without that connection I would be unable to use a cell phone. With the bluetooth connection I can hear & understand quite.

I keep saying that someday, when we get to Heaven, we'll see a bunch of people walking around, looking down at their empty hand!
If I am busy, I ignore mine when it rings. If it's important, they will call back like they did in the good old days OR leave a message.

It doesn't have to have anything to do with photography. This is the chit-chat non-photography section. Says so in the section title.

No, it is not just you. Young mothers walking their newborns in buggies, smart phone between mother and newborn. No interaction between the two. People walking their dog, 'scrolling' their way back home on their smart phone, totally ignoring their dog. Entering the waiting room at the doctors, nobody saying good morning all tied to their phones. In the super market, no communication with the cashier whilst being on the phone...and so on..

The software developers did an amazing job making sure people spend the rest of their lives on this electronic monster...

So sad..
