The Winecoff Hotel fire, December 7, 1946, was the deadliest hotel fire in American history. Photographer Andy Hardy won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize in Photography for his pictures. Although he was chased away by police, he continued shooting, and one image in particular proved to be a winner. His photographs got national attention and helped to bring about significant changes in fire safety.
The Winecoff Hotel was an upscale hotel that was promoted as being fireproof, and technically, it was. The brick and steel of the building was fireproof, but the residents were not. William Winecoff and his wife, the original owners, were staying there at the time, and they both died in the fire.
