I have used those orange drives and had 2 flake out on me. Once during a trip that I luckily had another drive with the same files otherwise would have lost a lot of the shots I had taken.

Yes, read and write are faster than ever except for our children they are getting slower and slower.

I have a couple that are flakey. Switched to all SSD drives.

For travel or rough use, I prefer an SSD. You can buy an M.2 drive and put it into a small case. You don't need a high performance model. I have a 1TB in one case and a 500GB in another.

I had a 2 TB Samsung SSD and I was always misplacing it due to it's small size and neutral gray color. I switched to the SanDisk 2 TB and now the 4TB SSD drives which are a darker gray but have bright orange strip in side the window.

Going forward, I’d get Samsungs and put some orange tape or paint on them

Have been using 2 Samsung 870 QVO 2TB SSD for C drive and windows backup for years. Also 1 Samsung 4TB 870 QVO for all files backup. Works like a champ no problems. They come as portable check Amazon.

When travelling, I may bring a laptop but usually just an 8" tablet for movies and book reading.
I back up my cards two ways, one using a WD My Passport Pro with a 2tb drive and the other is a RavPower file hub with a ssd and older hd. Both are 4 tb. The ssd is a Sandisk and the HD could be one of a few I have. The RavPower is also a power bank so it powers the hard drive connected to it.
My cameras use CF and SD cards, so the sd cards are saved as original files and the cf cards are reused if I start to run low on reserve CD cards. Mainly because SD cards are cheaper to keep in bag.

Western Digital is the most trust worthy and best. Samsung next. Seagate is now at the bottom since Toshiba doesn't mismake them any more.

I'm glad you mentioned Seagate. I've been reading bad things about Seagate since the 1980s, yet it seems to be very popular. Just about every video I watch about NAS has the guy using Seagate drives. Maybe the Seagate Ironwolf is reliable, but because "Seagate is bad" has been stuck in my head for four decades, I'll never buy one. I've always bought WD, and now I buy refurbished HGST (now owned by WD).

Just had a BIG segate die, RIP, had it for 10 years and it served me well. Have to break it down and use my Zelkey to retrieve the files.

Ten years is a good service life.

Slightly related - I knew a guy whose last name was Sidor. He owned a boat shop near the water, and he named it Seadoor Marine. Looking on Google, I guess he's gone out of business.

That would be WAY overkill for me! I'd never even come close to using a quarter of that space.
Price wise ($70-85), the 1TB Passport Ultra drives are QUITE ample for my needs.
My laptop has a 512GB drive in it.
I only use the Passport for travel backup for the laptop.
I will never need 4TB for images when traveling. Never.

At home, stuff on the laptop that I want backed up is copied to the desktop, which is backed up.

Ha! Been hearing that comment since the first IBM's came with a 10MB hard drive. then it was 20, then50, then 100 and it goes on.

Buy what you can afford and you feel comfortable with. Bad things happen to good people, so keep a current backup off site somewhere or subscribe to a cloud service for added protection.

For travel, I use a couple of SanDish Extreme Pros. They are adequately fast and fairly rugged so I'm not worried about tossing them in a bag. For home use, after a lot of research, I built my own 2TB SSD using the Samsung 990 Pro and an ORICO 40GBps NVMe SSD enclosure. This is where I keep all my photos and videos and it is crazy fast (nearly as fast as my M1 iMac built in SSD).

If you need speed...buy an internal M2 ssd drive...and pick up a portable case for it (25 bucks).

You will go from 2000mb/sec to 5000mb/sec.

Service life is one thing until a drive fails and you find yourself looking for files pertaining to arson cases investigated decades ago.
