What made their absence so bad was that I have a stack of six hard drives from computers that conked out - and those drives I cannot manage to resurrect no matter what I have done. So tons and tons of priceless (to me) shots - from 20 years of shooting digital.
Well today, I went into my closet and noticed a plastic bag by my socks and unmentionables, sitting there for years. The two drives!
