Okay thanks. The SSD is needed as I plan to use it as my travel unit. It will be a backup to the SD and compact flash cards on the road so needs to be tough and reliable. The home unit could be a spinner. Never thought of that option which is certainly cheaper.
Thanks, those drives are interesting. Very good price at 99 for the 2 TB units.
Since you didn't use quote, I can't tell if you're talking to me, but just in case, those orange Lacies aren't solid state, but older hdd's. I wouldn't be afraid of them, but you asked about ssd's.
There was a time when I wouldn't buy bigger that 4 GB for my cameras and 1 TB for storage but the reliability of devices has become more reliable and sturdy. I remember dropping a 2 TB drive as I was loading my Drobo and thought "Crap" there goes 2 years of photos, but everything still worked.

Note that for ANY external SSD, when writing to it for long backups, it gets hot...and something to monitor. If only writing to it for brief periods like 5-10 minutes, that shouldn't be a problem. Suggest you use some program like Crystal Disk Info, which shows the temperature. I think that 60°C is when you should start worrying about over-heating. My full backups typically get to 55°C after writing continuously for up to an hour...and then after completion, goes back to normal temperature, like the 25°C shown.
I have a Samsung 2TB SSD M.2 which I installed in ... (show quote)
I use a similar setup but use a faster case that the transfer speeds (read and write) are higher. If you have a newer Mac M1 or newer it has transfer speeds up to 40gb which on vacation you do not or at least I do not want to wait very long while I copy the photos off the card. Usually I have the time it takes my wife to get out of the shower before I have to be ready to go. I have 2 drives that the files are copied to simultaneously, one I carry the other goes in my wife’s pack (she does not know it I stuff it in the bottom). Anyway the case I use is an ACASIS 40Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, Tool Free Installation, TBU 401 for M1 M2 Pro/Max, Compatible with USB4/3.2/3.1/3.0/2.0, Support SSD Size 2280 B+M M-Key (TBU401) you can get this on Amazon. It does get hot but you can edit right on the card massive files due to the high read and write speeds. Unfortunately I have not found any of the “pre made” drives (western digital, San disk etc) can match the speeds this case delivers. I do have a bunch of them that now sit unused.
