Child GPS Tracking Devices.

Not sure if this is the proper section to post this, but...
JUST GETTING STARTED and need help, information, experience on Child GPS tracking devices. Nugget, my 8 year old Down Syndrome granddaughter, is very mobile, quick, and is a runner. WE have been advised to look into a Child GPS tracking device; however, really have no idea on how or where to get started. Last week she got away from her paternal grandparents and ran into a corn field and it took over an hour and about 20 people to find her. If she to get lost at an event, park, or etc. she would not be able to tell anyone her last name, address, etc. It's a bit scary.
My question is do any of you have any experience or knowledge with these devices? Any first hand information would be most welcome.
 Thanks.

Perhaps her doctor could give you some advice on this Harry.

I stuck an airtag in my car to be able to find it in large parking lots. Airtags seem to work for me (tracking via my iPhone) but the battery has to be replaced probably annually. It's not an expensive battery and it's pretty easy to replace. They come with a little leather strap so you can tie them onto something.

What a beautiful little girl.

I think I can help you. My youngest grandson loves to play. He's nine now, but about six months ago his Mom thought he was outside playing with friends but when she went to look for him she couldn't find him. She looked all over and still couldn't find him. Turns out he'd gone to one of his friend's homes. He eventually showed up but not until he'd scared everybody. The next day he had what appeared to be a watch on his wrist but it was an apple tracking device.

It's too late for me to contact my daughter to get the exact description, but I can tomorrow if you're interested.

I guess you've ruled out the injectable kind they use for dogs.😋

Keeping any kind of electronic device with a child 24/7 seems like an impossibility.

Depends on where she gets lost…an AirTag relies on other iPhones to report its location encrypted to Apple and thence to you. If no iPhones are near (don’t know if Android phones will report the data to Apple) then all Find My will show you is the last known position. Amazon shows a number of alternatives for tracking child via GPS…but most/all will require a subscription to be paid. But for a non verbal fast child you want to track…sounds like a subscription is just the price of the safety.

Alternatively…give her an Apple Watch with cellular and as long as she is within cell signal range it will report back to Find My just fine. Of course…she will have to unlock it via the passcode every time she puts it on.

Maybe something could be inserted into a shoe.

Many years ago, I was driving along a highway, and I saw an old man walking. I turned around and went back to him. He was lost, so I offered him a ride. I don't know how, but he was finally able to find his house. He was living with his daughter's family, and they were in a panic over his disappearance. This was in the early 1960s, long before tracking electronics were available.
