Big Fire

Ten fire companies worked for fifteen hours to bring a fire under control. One of the buildings at the Neville resort was destroyed. If you're not familiar with the name, the Neville was one of the big Catskill resorts for decades. It' s been closed for years, but it was sold in September.

I found the mini headline below somewhat amusing.

"Nevele sold for $5 million, with plans to demolish buildings to make way for housing."

"...the two-story building was “all too far gone” to be renovated and would most likely have been slated for demolition."

If there was insurance involved, the price of demolition just jumped from the expense column in the ledger to the income column!

I wonder if there will be an investigation.

That is a shame- I was at the Nevele 3 decades ago for business, so I was only there for a short time but I was fascinated by the Art Deco design - it was simply a beautiful building. I really only got to see the main lobby and the bookkeepers office, but I was really impressed.

Yes, those hotels were perfect for conventions. I went to several there.

Never stayed at the Nevele but I did hike to Nevele falls many many moons ago.
There was a rumor that Nevele was from Eleven backwards. Something about 11 brothers?

Back in the 70's I used to stay at the Concord resort for the NYS Fire Chief's convention . Is that gone too now?

Sad to see this. Gail and I went to an occasional show there in the summer of '64. We got a kick out of the fact that Nevele was eleven spelled backwards. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there were 11 brothers in the family that owned it.

That could be. Remember the store E J Korvette? I had always heard that the name derived from "Eight Jewish Korean Veterans." That's a false story, though. It was started by a WW II veteran and his friend.

"Name origins. According to Korvette's founder, Eugene Ferkauf, who died on June 5, 2012, the name "E. J. Korvette" was coined as a combination of the initials of its founders (Eugene and Joe) and a re-spelling of the naval term corvette, a nimble sailing warship and later World War II sub-destroyer."
