This is odd - not the first time I've said that. I've had my mouse and keyboard connected to two different USB hubs - for years. Yesterday, although the mouse would light up, it would not work until I plugged it into the computer. I tried several ports in both hubs, with no luck. Later in the day, the keyboard wouldn't work, although it was lit up (It's a lighted keyboard). No port in either hub would get it to work.
Both of these incidents occurred after waking the computer from sleep, something I have done hundreds of times. When I turned the computer on this morning, the keyboard would still not work, so I connected it directly to the computer. The other devices plugged into the hubs work fine. Maybe the hubs now require power for the mouse and keyboard, but why - after so many years? As I said - odd. If I can find a 5v power source, I'll try it.
Did you try a power restart?
I had a mouse lock up once or twice, rebooting the computer fixed it.
Just a thought.
As you mentioned you had this setup in place for some time and as you stated it's been working. So why not just plug the keyboard and mouse directly into PC ports and use the hub for other devices? Just a thought and for me I have a few pc's set up and I personally always plug the mouse and keyboard directly into my PC. But that's just me.

This large computer (Big Red) is sitting on top of the computer rolltop desk because it's too large to fit into the computer compartment. I now have two wires running up to the computer - not very aesthetic. I could go the wireless route, but I like the lighted keyboard.
Maybe check to see if the Windows USB drivers have become corrupted. Since it is improbable that two different USB Hubs plugged into two different USB ports would suddenly experience the same issue I would start there. One question that I would check into is whether all USB devices fail to work on these hubs or if they are isolated to your mouse and keyboard. It is simple to fix driver problems by uninstalling the driver and then rebooting Windows. Windows will automatically install the appropriate drivers.

I don’t think that’s what’s necessarily happening here, but if you unplug a USB device and replug it, windows will often “add” a new device rather than using the old driver and settings. For example if you plug in an external device the first time, it will be labeled “USB1”, but if you unplug and replug it, it may become “USB2” and if you look under USB devices in control panel, both entries are there. That can be an issue for some SW that expects to see a device labeled “USB1” that is no longer viable. Windows shouldn’t have this issue with a mouse, but just making you aware in the event that’s the case.
I really like wired mouse/keyboard. The desk hides the mess.

After one of Windows numerous upgrades a month or so back my computer stopped reading portable hard drives from a hub. I tried two different hubs with the same result.
I can read and import files from the flash card reader.
I get message that I need to change some settings to allow file transfers?
What settings?

My desk hasn't learned that skill. ☹
I found the transformer for the hub, and I plugged it in. The mouse and keyboard still did not work. Everything else on both hubs works fine. I keep saying that I'm going to clear this desk and rewire everything. Maybe tomorrow. 😋
