Macro lenses

Hey Hoggers i'm looking for advice on a macro for mainly flowers and dog portraits. After lots of research I have pretty much narrowed it down to the Nikon 105mm vr and Tamron 90mm vc. My body is a Nikon D7200. Any one have experience on both or one or the other? My gut says the Nikon but I keep reading about how good the Tamron is. I did find a "like new " Tamron for about the same price as an "excellent" Nikon at MPB.Thanks for any input.

Both are so good that it wont matter if one is slightly better in bench testing (which has no real world meaning).
Get the Nikon, cuz you just never know what surprises Nikon will spring in future that will be less than friendly toward the Tamron. An extra 15mm might be handy as well.

I used the Tamron 90/2.8 next gen lens with the D7200 and was very happy with it, although much good to be said about the Nikkor 105 too. Either one makes a great portrait or short tele lens too.

The Nikon has been produced exactly for your Nikon, the Tamron has been manufactured to fit many camera's without being specifically designed for the Nikon. The Nikon was produced to exact manufacturing standards. The Nikon will be worth more at trade in or selling than the Tamron. Tamron does not hold on to value as high as the Nikon does.
You should be happier with the Nikon than from a third party lens.
PS. Nikon produces it's lenses from blanks that it produces, Tamron buys their glass finished from other producers.

There's a lot of truth to what you say. I was interested in the new Tamron 150-500 lens for the Z mount but quite a few reviews on B&H and elsewhere indicated a fit problem with the Z mount (too loose!). Otherwise it seems like a fine lens, but because of that issue I will avoid buying that lens.

My brother shoots with the Tamron 90mm. He is quite pleased with it. I use a Tokina 100mm. I love it. You might want to look at it, also.

I agree bench testing has no value in real world. I always go with camera manufacturers lens. Made one exception with a Tamron big zoom it works great but auto focus struggles manual focus works fine. Depends on your budget, they all will work. Your photography skills are what makes the difference.

I have the Nikon 105 mm macro lens as well as a sigma 180 F2 .8 macro lens. The sigma lens gives you a 19 inch working distance from your subject, which keeps you from scaring away insects or other small wildlife. I almost never use the Nikon 105 because the sigma is very sharp and easy to work with. It is however quite large. I don’t remember the cost of the sigma, but it was reasonable.

I have only had experience with the Nikon 105 Micro lens but loved it.

Unless you plan to use it for portraits, and only want it for macro, save yourself some money and get the Nikon without VR. Macro should be done on a tripod using manual focus, and with the VR turned off. Also look at the Tokina 100mm macro. Most people will tell you it’s the equal to the Nikon in sharpness and could save you a few more bucks.
