Perhaps as the loss leader the 40 doesn't have the aperture ring. But for your Z7 the aperture ring isn't important. Only for the Zf which the aperture ring is important.

If its important enuf then theres the Sigmas.

I was overjoyed to give up aperture rings in 1987. Suddenly, swapping lenses was faster and immune to error.

What could ever be more retro looking than a huge ponderous Zeiss Ikon Contasaurus Rex ?
But I would never recommend it to you, if you wanted an ultra classic, cuz theres no aperture control rings on its lenses, just a little knurled dial for your shutter finger to spin ... just like on every 2024 camera.

IOW moving the aperture control from the lens to the upper right corner of the body is the Zeiss Ikon ultimate in 1960s style, so get with the program, and quit whining and nit picking.

I don't own one but my these are what I think. Take it with a grain of salt as I don't own one.
1. I have the Df and I found it's much too big compared to a film camera like the FE or FM even the Nikkormat. The Zf is smaller but is still larger than those film cameras.
2. The Zf is a mirrorless and thus it has EVF. You may like it but it's sure what you see in the viewfinder isn't anywhere near what you would see thru the old SLR's of yours. For better or worse up to you.
3. The controls are there at the same old places except the aperture settings. Even the retro lookin 40mm lens doesn't have the aperture ring either.
4. It has a prominent exposure compensation dial while only the FE has the EC but in a place not meant to be used often. On the Zf it means to be used often as it's located conveniently at the right thumb.
5. It has the MASP-Auto setting which the film SLR's you mentioned didn't have.
6. This I guess nobody cares but as Ken Rockwell also said it's made in Thailand instead of Japan like the FE, FM or even the lowly Nikkormat.

I'm a dedicated Nikon user. I used to have a D600 and now own at D750 and D850. Recently Nikon had a 30 day free trial on the Zfc so I got one to try it out and sent it back. It's an amazing camera but I absolutely do not like holding it in my hand and I don't like the controls. For that reason I'm not interested in the Zf. I've shot the Z9 and the Z7II and to me these feel like Nikons in my hand. I don't know if Nikon is reading this but if you are - I've got money in the bank in hopes that you come out with a Z6III. In my mind it would be the Zf in a more ergonomic body. Please Nikon. I've been waiting almost 2 years for it. Please.

You are not the kind of customers that Nikon made the Zf for? The performance of the Zf is only so so. Not all that impressive compared to the Z6ii. The ergonomic is what the Zf is about. If you don't like the ergonomic of the Zf then it's not for you.

In 2013, I was thinking replace my D200 with a new one, I took the Df instead the D800 and I never look back and now I got the Zf not the Z6 nor the Z7. I love both. They are not for every body. Either you love them or hate them!

Many times I’ve said to place less importance on brand name and more on what feels right. Doesn’t matter if it’s cameras, shoes or underwear. You may learn to tolerate something that’s uncomfortable, but you will never be happy with it.

The worst thing is the best feeling pair of underwear I have has SpongeBob on them. So I can’t just drop my drawers and show everyone because I’d be thrown into jail or the looney bin.

And why do we call them a pair of underwear or a pair of jeans when they are a single object? And don’t say because they have two legs because even short-shorts with basically no legs are still called a pair. This is the stuff that keeps me awake at night. Not world peace, climate change, a volcanic eruption in north Missouri or scientists recreating the wooly mammoth and then releasing them into the wild.

Thanks Joe, that's kind of what I was thinking too. Especially since I do have a ton of older lenses. Will have to keep my eyes open for a clean 850.

Roberts/usedphotopros have several refurbished on eBay. All have the Roberts 6-month warranty and those in condition mint or excellent get a free 1-year Allstate warranty. They are a very well-rated company.

Wanting to get back to my life time hobby, I have been repeatedly perusing the Nikon USA webpage and the Zf caught my eye. It takes me back to the days of the Nikkormat, the FE, the FM, when cameras were simpler. The Zf seems a little bit more more analog than digital, does anyone out there has any comments or feedback on this camera that wants to share?
Much appreciated.
Claude

YouTube has reviews of the Zf. Also, Google "reviews of Nikon Zf"

Your concern is addressed at the limits of "short shorts". A "Bikini Bottom" is in the singular form. Seems like its simply about where to draw the line on drawers (plural).

It’s historical. Pants and underpants in medieval times were two pieces, one for each leg, that were joined together when you put them on.
