AzPicLady Loc: Behind the camera!

When I'm using multiple cameras, I found that having them all perfectly synced by time is 1/2 the battle. After doing that, it becomes pretty easy to put everything in chrono order. I simply put them in a folder, and when looking at the list of files, I click on the date header. When there are several on the same date with file names from different cameras, they will automatically sort secondarily by file name, but that's rare because obviously one would not be using two cameras at the same time. You can, of course, change the file names as you mentioned, but I prefer not to. If they are way off, I simply put numbers in front of the file names so that they sort correctly. (I'm in Windows, by the way.)

Perhaps I should explain a little more of where I'm at. I tried to common sense my way through this process but as usual my intuitive nature does not align itself with the way technology does. What I did was to download my keepers and arranged them in chronological order in a folder in the Collections section. I then exported them from that folder in LR6.16 to my flash drive. But when I played it back some of the images were not in chronological order. I noticed that the file date didn't necessarily place the photo where it should appear. The photos that were in the wrong order had a different file name. So I'm assuming that what dictates where each photo appears is the file name not the file date as suggest by User. How do I change the file name for the keeper photos so they appear in the right order? I hope I don't have to review the photos to figure out where one is missing then find it and rename it with a new file name. There has to be an easier way of doing this even if it means going back to the first step of importing all the photos into LR6.14.

You can change the sort within your directory window but it’s likely that whatever software you’re using to display the photos will revert to file name. I don’t know LR6.14 but possibly you could create an export preset that renames the files based on chronological order. Or an import preset, but that wouldn’t just be the keepers.

I have Photoshop Elements. My Organizer can (and does for me as set) put all images in chronological order, even time. Or, you can create albums in whatever order you choose, and then export them directly to your flash drive.

A different approach...I preach why using dates to organize images makes no sense, but I still do it...kind of.

Next week will be 4 days of shooting the Texas Hill Country, maybe 200-500 shots per day using two cameras. Using my portable, I will upload via Photo Mechanic (PM) each date so noted to the Folder - Upload. Upload will be backed up on a 1tb thumb drive I carry in my pocket. When I return to base, using the original media, I will upload again via PM to the main computer (date separated or not, makes no difference).

Using LRC, I then import from Upload. Using Collections, I then can create all kinds of special sorts including date (I will not) or anything else. Using Keywords and Collections gives me all control...including dates.

The above works great especially major shoots, protection 3 deep in case of error and total control into the unknown future.

Hope it helps someone...

That really doesn’t apply to the OP’s issue. The problem is the order after export.

I recently returned from a trip with several hundred photos taken via 4 different sources. One source was my D750 wherein I used 2 SD cards (I consider this to be 2 sources), another source was a Sony RX100 II, and the other source was a android cell phone. The shots taken with the camera's were all in RAW. I want to arrange the keeper shots from these 4 sources in chronological order and put on a thumb drive for future viewing. I use LR6.14. I also have the following plugins: Luminar Neo, Topaz Photo AI, and ON1 Effects 2023. Would someone please enlighten me as to how to go about doing this? Thank you.

First, did you synchronize the clocks on the various cameras before your trip started?

In LR in the Library view, you have the ability to sort by capture date so all the images would then be presented in time sequence. This same sorting order can be used to 'order' your output files via the LR Export. When you export, use this sort order and give the files a new common name that includes a sequential counter in the file name. If you need more detailed help on how to do the export, let me know in the responses.

Can you number that group of files by putting the number at the beginning of the file names?

Hello, it is not necessary to put a number at the top of the file name.
With ExifDateChanger, all your files are automatically in chronological order.
You will see, in the attached example, that my files also have the location after the date and time and possibly the first names of my family members.
The advantage, with the Windows search, I can display for example, all the photos whose name contains "Paul", or even all the photos taken in May 2011: search argument "2011-05-".
Sincerely

First, Paul has an excellent response below this comment.

My response was on target, but let me draw an additional line. When you Export from Collections set up for date sort, the images will be true to that setting.

Now having said that, setting up folders based on dates is old school and went out with LRC.

I use a process similar to how AzPicLady sorts her image files. I create folders for each date, then copy/paste all pics from that date into its specific folder. There is even convenient madness to how cell phone pics are named from my Samsung S22+. I put each date folder into a master folder and for the past few years I have used my six alpha/numeric flight reservation code as the name on the master folder. The only other change I make to the original generated file name...I add a short suffix that lets me know I have in some way edited the image, and in the case of monochrome the suffix tells me if I have applied a filter to that image. I do not rename the original files; I have each of my Nikons set up with the file name unique to the individual camera.

If you don’t change the name in export it won’t matter what order a colllection is in.

I use the FastStone Image Viewer and use the rename function to rensme by date and time. It uses the creation date and time that was written to the metadata when the shot was taken. You can batch process whole folders.

When each file name is unique, you do not have to change the names.

It sounds to me like there's a couple of issues here. First, as others pointed out, LR Classic can sort photos about 20 different ways, including by capture time. Second, and maybe this is the key issue, if various cameras are not set to the exact same time, when their photos are combined, many will appear out of sequence. LR Classic has the ability to edit the capture time, as well. Here's an article on the topic: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/premium-classic/metadata/editing-capture-time/.

Whatever works best for you? Sometimes I use two or three Nikons and my cell phone when out shooting, especially on a trip like the Oregon Pacific coast, Grand Canyon region or Alaska. Each date folder can have up to three sources of images; in each folder they are arranged by time taken but are grouped in the folder by image source first. I personally find no need to fully integrate every image by time taken. If I ever have to do that, I will create a Power Point presentation.

If you use Windows, forget about all the above. Put all the shots in the same folder, select "Details" and double click on the date column. You will get your photos arranged in consecutive (by date) order. Go from there when loading into whatever video maker you use.
