We don't live on PBS, so I suppose the timing may be off.

Here's your charities at work:

Considering the above "reality" of the charities at work . . . I would be in favor of a government mandated law that stipulates a fixed amount of income taxes be designated for charity. But only if this negotiated amount . . . perhaps 1, 2, or maybe 3 percent of income be watched very carefully by a group appointed again by government to watch over this whole process so that no graft or stealing takes place. The obvious beauty of such a plan is that every taxpayer would be donating a reasonable amount within the confines of what they can afford. Yes I realize that this is an "idealist dream" that will never happen. But think of how something like this could change our country.

PBS do have ads but only in between shows which is long about 5 minutes. Most of the ads are for other shows on the stations but they do have some commercial ads also there are ads at the beginning and end of a show for the companies that sponsor the show.
Still I like PBS.

Usually because the "half-hour" show (20-25 minutes to allow for ads) is aired without ads in a 30 minute slot, they need a filler to make the half-hour. I've no problem with that.
Most British shows are actually 30 or 60 minutes long.
YEARS ago I taped a one hour show, pausing for commercials. The result was a 45 minute "show".

Ditto on the K-cups.
We have the DUO, so we make a pot in the morning and use K-cups occasionally in the afternoon/evening.
We also use the refillable K-cups at times, but always have a choice of 5 K-cup coffee brands.
We don't go out locally just for coffee.

We generally refill the K-cups, but we also buy boxes of various flavors of K-cup coffee.

It's a real chore! First, I have to remove the top from the container of coffee. Then I remove the little measuring cup as I fill it with coffee. Finally, I put the coffee into an empty K-cup. Actually, it takes just seconds to fill a cup. Eventually, the plastic "hinge" will break from flexing over several months, but that's no big deal. Below are the cups I buy.

Measuring cup - I made a measuring cup for the K-cups. I filled a K-cup to the proper level and marked that level with a line on the cup. Then I use a box cutter to cut along the line. Now, when I fill that measuring cup, I have the right amount of coffee.

I totally agree that St Judes does great work (Danny Thomas founded it and a former sister-in-law was a nurse there). Also there are many other great organizations. One problem is which one to go to. I'm sure they will take credit card donations but I was told they want to be able to make monthly donations automatically and I don't like that. They didn't want just a one time donation. It's not the charity but the fund raising group they contract with. Another good group here is the Shriners Childrens Hospital, but I got the same story from them (probably the same fund raisers). I don't mean to degrade the charities themselves, I just get so tired of seeing the same commercials over and over, knowing how they operate.

I used to live in Erie, PA; which is the location of one of the Shriner's Childrens Hospitals. I know some of the surgeons and staff members. Recipients of services can't pay. The Shriners hospitals are completely donor supported and they do amazing things to help children with birth defects and who are crippled by health conditions. One of the orthopedic surgeons I know donates his time and he is a miracle worker, in my view.

He has a private practice and supports himself, and lives at a much lower standard of living so he can devote much of his time to his passion. That passion is helping crippled children.

I believe in supporting the Shriners Childrens Hospitals. They are a great service organization.

The reusable K-cups are plastic with a lid and screened sides and bottom.
He's not refilling used plastic K-cups.
We use them also.

For some time now I have received requests from charities requesting $19.00. Why do they all request $19.00 as their minimum amount? Also would make this a monthly payment from you.
Give to one charity and you receive many requests from other charities. I do not need the stress of all this so I will no longer donate unless it is in cash at the red kettle.

I'm assuming it has to do with what they're doing for St. Jude's, Shriners Hospital and ASPCA....$19/month is $0.63 per day.
