PBS and NPR do get government grants and claim they are donor supported but many of the shows are supported by corporate and foundation sponsors. The short acknowledgements are just like advertising. I wish they would just start accepting advertising.

ALSO, PBS and NPR act like they are owned by the extreme liberals. Their stories and reporting are so far from balanced and non-political, that they might just as well come-out and call themselves National Liberal Television and Liberal Broadcasting Service.

I do enjoy some of their dramas, comedies and historical documentaries; but can't stand listening much of their discussion. They would rather die than include anyone with a conservative opinion in their programming.

I have a similar disdain for the news media.

I don't mind donating to worthwhile charities and causes. But - I don't like it when they state a minimum of $25 or $50. Assuming thousands of people nationwide are donating, even a dollar would help. I can imagine people hesitating if the minimum donation is $25. The charity gets nothing instead of $10.

I'm posting this because I just received a link from a friend to donate to a hospital. The minimum is $25, but the suggested amount is $50. I realize that $25 isn't a lot of money, but I think it would hold some people back.

My son recently brought a jar of coins to the coin machine at the bank. It contained $285, and that was just from "loose change." It all adds up.

What do the machines charge for doing the counting?

Before making a donation to a “charity” ask to see their how they distribute their donations. If administrative fees and salaries are more than 5% of their net, I’m moving on. Some physical donations are given to some at no cost and some are sold. Since you must be a specific religion I am headed away. When a charity places a minimum amount of the donation, if you offered less, will they send it back?

The smallest donation is the one not given!

If it costs that much to process a monthly donation, they are an extremely wasteful charity, and I wouldn't give them anything. I give to Tunnels 2 Towers, and they have no problem with $11 donations. More than 95% of the funds raised are devoted to their charitable outreach.

Before giving to any charity, do some research. Some pay their CEO's massive salaries. Some have extremely high and wasteful overhead expenses. Some are outright scams. NEVER respond to a phone solicitation without checking on the legitimacy of the agency in question. Request that they mail some literature to you. If they refuse, or make excuses, they are probably scammers.

Back in the days without caller ID, when I answered any call that came in, I started telling the solicitors that I would consider a donation, IF they sent me an annual report. I don't think that any of them ever did.

I've also found that a good website to investigate charities and how them spend their money is charitynavigator.org

I totally agree that St Judes does great work (Danny Thomas founded it and a former sister-in-law was a nurse there). Also there are many other great organizations. One problem is which one to go to. I'm sure they will take credit card donations but I was told they want to be able to make monthly donations automatically and I don't like that. They didn't want just a one time donation. It's not the charity but the fund raising group they contract with. Another good group here is the Shriners Childrens Hospital, but I got the same story from them (probably the same fund raisers). I don't mean to degrade the charities themselves, I just get so tired of seeing the same commercials over and over, knowing how they operate.

Wow, the PBS stations I watch have no ads.......
That's why they require funding of some sort.

So you're suggesting that they start showing ads to acquire operating revenue???

The nice thing about PBS, NO ADS.

At the risk of sending this to the attic, I make this statement:
PBS and NPR are wonderful as long as you have no interest in hearing BOTH sides of a political issue.

Dedicated monthly donations make their budgeting easier, they have "planned income" to work with.
It's very difficult to budget on random donations.

One thing about my local PBS station is that they set a goal for their fund raising campange. And they won't stop until they meet their goal. They kept saying help them to meet their goal so that they can return to the regular programming (they implied if not you will have to continue to suffer from all this)

Record old shows off cable and forget the PBS station number. Or get a library card.
