I am new to this, and maybe some of you folks can provide some suggestions. How does one go about finding photo contests (e.g., portraits, scenic, pets, etc.) to enter?

Thank you. Steve W.

I found several by typing "photo contests" on google.com search.
Be sure and read the "fine print" of the contest. There are folks without scruples who use a "photo contest" to gain great photos and usage rights for free.
I'm a fan of I-Shot-It.com. I won $700 in the Wildlife category my first time competing. I also won some "marks of excellence".It is a nicely run website.
I just looked at I-Shot-It and it is wonderful. I always enjoy a place where people say what settings are used (quite often) so we can learn. Thanks for this recommendation.

I agree. The only ones requiring a entry fee I would enter are sponsored or put on by good camera clubs. Also carefully read the rules. Many contests state they keep all copyrights to photos entered. You do not want that. It means they can use the photos entered, whether they are winners or not, for anything they want and can even sell the photo to anyone they want. They can even restrict your use of the photo.
Also remember, once you start entering photo contests you will also start receiving a lot of spam and fraudulant contest scams. These always ask for entry fees. You send the photo and the money and that is the last you hear from them under that address. It is a shame we have to PYOB, but that is life on the internet.
