The RX10 has the highest image quality of anything I own - @ ISO 400 or less ......I would definitely take it anywhere and enjoy the trip. It really is a PLEASURE to use the RX10. Yes, if I had $10 K invested in Z9 or A1 W/ lens, I guess I would take that and use the RX10 as back-up - but, I WOULD be taking the RX !

I would certainly take it over the OP's 7D II or 5DIV ! - the 5D being way too SLOW.

If you compare the RX to the Z9 or A1 or R3/5 or A7RV, the RX looses but IMO, for just about everything else, the RX competes at ISO 400 or less - for $1700 ! ! and 1/3 the size and weight....

I appreciate all the comments regarding my initial question.
I have had the 7d in for a few years and have been thinking of upgrading to the r7, thus the thought of “renting” it, but would wait for the upgrade ii version to see what differences there are. Ever since my wife passed in 2014, I have wanted to take my daughter on a trip like this and this opportunity has become available. I have been doing much research on the r7 (even purchased the pocket guide vice downloading the 300 page manual (and why is it that manuals are no longer included with the camera??). So, yes, I can mount my 24-105 on my 5d and even use the 1.4ii on it, I can use my 7d ii with my 100-400, but for the small rental fee for the r7 with all its “new” features, I have until December to decide. I plan on taking a road trip up to B&H as the ability to hold the camera and chat with their canon staff is great.
Side note: I trade 4 cartons of cigarettes (I didn’t smoke then or now), in ‘68 while in Nam for a Pentax K-1000. It’s always been a great “work in progress”!

“At ISO 400 or less” is a big caveat and I don’t think it’s true. My OM-1 is far superior and Z9 & Z7 even more. I also don’t think it’s a joy to shoot. The electronic zoom is a hindrance and the ergonomics suck.

There are many good reasons the paper manual is no longer included. For one thing the PDF is superior for searching and it can be updated to keep current with firmware updates. But really think of the logistics. First of all a 300 page manual would be unwieldy and it would increase the packaging size and weight by quite a bit, increasing shipping costs. My Z9 manual is pushing 1000 pages.

I once handled one just to see what all the fuss is about. Verrrrry unappealing device, regardless of whether results are any good.

Theres enuf minicameras to choose from in the m4/3 realm that are so much friendlier and, acoarst, are normal system cameras.

The only reason I use one is because it gives me that 24-600mm equivalent range and fast AF in a package I can shoot from a kayak. Anything else I’m shooting my Olympus or Nikons.

The electronic zoom is a blessing !....Yes, I thought the same as you when I first started using it - you need to use it more and think about it - like I did.

To whom it may concern...the level of kindness on UHH is underwhelming.

You can use the 1.4x on the 5D4 with the 100-400L (and it’s an excellent combination), but not with the 24-105L (won’t physically fit).

As a writer of procedure, software, and device manuals for decades, I can tell you with reasonable confidence that 75% to 80% of them are never opened. There is an aversion to them.

First of all, the reading ability of the general public is pathetic. Then there is the resistance to having to "translate a bad translation" from Japanese English to American English. Then there is the complaint that manuals are generally good at telling you HOW to use the device, but not WHEN, WHERE, and WHY to use it. (Never mind that the purpose of a manual is NOT to teach when, where, and why — That's what a good book or a course on photography is for.)

Having the searchable and hyperlinked PDF downloaded to my smartphone and computer? THAT's useful. The manual to my camera is 420 pages. The manuals to some of the latest cameras are 1000 to 1200 pages. I don't want to lug that in my camera bag! However, the PDF weighs nothing.

Since I have my iPhone on me all the time, I always have the manual stored to Apple Books when I need it. In fact, I have the manuals to all our cars and appliances on there, too, along with pertinent info such as model and serial numbers and dates of purchase and manufacture. They come in handy when getting service or parts.

Appreciate the comments on the lens/camera post and also about downloading the manuals to my phone. Great suggestion!

I forgot to mention (and I always say it to people going to Africa) that you go to Africa for the animals and return for the people. Excellent people photography. Nice people, often living in very tough conditions. Leave as much money as you can, etc. They were really strapped for money during COVID. Some tribal people live in very difficult circumstances. Be generous. And take lots of people pics!
