It seems that new flash drives are formatted FAT32. I was copying files to one just now, and with 10GB on this 16GB drive, it could not fit just 5GB more. I formatted it to exFAT, and now it's accepting more files.
I was able to put 13.5GB of data on this drive after formatting it to exFAT. I'm sending it someone who will just download the files, so it won't be kept 90% full.
Not that it could not fit 5GB more but it won't accept any single file larger than 4GB. If you have many files totaled to over 5GB it would accept it.

Right. I wasn't able to break it up, though. It was 5GB or nothing.

I would like to put music onto flash drives to listen to in my car . . . but I am woefully lacking in knowledge about how to do it. Any suggestions about a source of easy to read information for an "old codger" like myself would surely be appreciated.

After getting the music onto your computer, just drag-and-drop it onto the flash drive. It's just like moving any other files. At least, that's how I do it.

Try using a RAR type compression, it will break up the file into smaller chunks which can be reassembled
