I prefer a view finder also. But reviews took me to the G7X.

There hasn't been much discussion lately about true pocket cameras. (Ones you can actually slip into a front pocket or cargo pants side pocket.) I know cell phones have encroached in this domain, but I curious if hoggers have a preference as to currently offered models and which one is the best.

Just got a Nikon P330 used for when I don't want carry the dslr/lenses. 12.5mb, P, A, S, M; 24-120 zoom, jpeg AND raw, gps, small flash. About the size of a deck of cards! Fits easy in the front pocket! With the gps, I can easily return to shoot later with the big camera!

I have and like very much both the Canon G7X Mark II and the Panasonic ZS100. I would give the image sharpness edge to the Canon but the Panasonic has more zoom and bells and features.

A word about the Canon. Apparently, some influencers on TikTok or Instagram are using the Canon G7X Mark II, and it's become very popular and hard to find.

I've been shooting my pocket-sized Canon Powershot G9Xii more than any other of my film & digital cameras. At 20MP capturing in RAW, with IBIS, it does a wonderful job, better than my phone. Both Canon and Sony offer these cameras, sized roughly the same as a deck of cards.

After I bought my G7 I had a student show up in class with a G9 and I got to play with it. I kicked myself quite a few times -- the G9 is truly shirt pocketable while the G7 is jacket pocketable. The G9 is a seriously awesome camera for what they've packed into that tiny size -- indeed a tour de force it should get some kind of award.

I want to expand on the phone issue. I'm not allowed to go out without a phone so I'm stuck carrying both. If the phone cameras could do the job I'd upgrade my phone and just carry that, but the phones aren't there yet. I check regularly and the bottom line is they're not yet able to compete. This goes for all of the 1" sensor compacts still on the market; the Sony, Canon and Panny all have the same basic hardware guts that the phones don't have. There's a hardware bottom line and it's a 20 mp 1" sensor with a 14 bit ADC capable of recording 9 to 10 usable stops of DR. The best the phones can provide is a 10 to 12 bit ADC and sensor capable of 7 to 8 stops of usable DR many really only able to deliver 6 to 7 usable stops of DR -- not enough.

If I'm going to make the effort to always have a camera ready then I want a camera that can back me up and go the distance. The phone cameras can handle most of what I'd want to photograph but the 1" sensor compacts can handle all of what I'd want to photograph.

Here's an example. Few years ago my brother from Texas paid a visit. When you have out-of-town guests you have to entertain them. My brother likes wineries so we took him to a new winery in a small town up the river -- Grafton. We didn't realize at the time that the Mississippi and Illinois rivers were above flood stage. We got to visit the winery OK and I got to snap a couple flood photos. Here's my favorite flood photo from the excursion. I had to take the lighting as it was, strongly backlit on a sunny day. Given the backlighting I needed the 9-10 stops of DR my G7 delivers in a raw file. This is a perfect example of why I carry a small compact at all times. You never know what you're going to see and you never know under what conditions you'll find it. With a 1" sensor compact like my G7 I'm as ready as possible to get the photo I want. No current phone camera could have taken that photo.

On my "wish list" is the TG-6 or TG-7. Waterproof, 7' drop proof, 11X macro, ring flash attachment, etc. And will easily fit in one's pocket. Not as sophisticated as larger cameras but offers more than a smartphone as far as I am concerned.

I agree with the TG-6 or 7. And I have to say that it's actually pretty sophisticated as well as "tough". Multiple macro functions. Multiple white balance functions. Shoots jpeg or RAW. Has an available telephoto. There is an available underwater case (much less expensive than typical ones) if you should need to go deeper than 50 feet in water. I do, I SCUBA dive with it. I hate the OLY menu, that's the only negative thing I have to say about it.

I have a Sony HX99 I put in my pocket. With around 18 mp it serves me well for those times I can't or don't want to lug around a big bulky camera and lens.

Tough TG 6 or 7. I have the 6 and it’s pretty much indestructible. It flew out of my hand once and soared about 20 feet onto hard pavement with no ill effects. It will shoot RAW, has 3 internal axis of stabilization, good to 50 feet underwater, and great macro. You can also buy a lens cap as well as a telephoto attachment to add more zoom. Oh, and it fits easily into a cargo pocket.

If money is no object then the Sony RX100vii is the Best pocket camera you can buy! I own this camera so I’m not just reading off the internet.

I own this (and have owned others in its genre) and agree. Top to bottom features, it has no equal.

I own the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII. $1298. from B&H. Love the camera for still and video. I own bigger cameras Canon R6 and Canon Vixia G60 for video. The Sony is great when you want to travel light. I but all my camera equipment from B&H. They are honest people to deal with.

Not cheap, but I use a R100vii and find the RAW images good to work with.

Interesting that all the websites say the Ricoh GR iii X is the best pocket camera ever, yet no one has one. I rented one for a trip, and it was not love at first click.... Personally, I will always be a Sony RX100 gal. The sony RX100 series (I have a couple) - will still get you great photos even after a couple drinks!!! But I have never tried a Canon G7x - maybe I will rent one and check it out.

That being said... How sad for us camera lovers that we are still talking about cameras that came out in 2019 !! I HATE using my phone for photography, and I know the companies can't make money on point and shoot/pocket cams anymore.... But I really miss them. We need to somehow make cameras cool again.

Ditto on the G7Xii. Great results and extremely fast touch settings. Only drawback is lack of a viewfinder. Easy transfer of photos to iPhone for editing with iPhone editor and free Snapseed. I also use iPhone 14 Pro Max - excellent results.
Haven’t carried Sony Aii on travel trips and hiking in ages except for birding outings.

I like the RICHO GRiii.
