The G7 has an awesome, sharp, fast zoom. It never lets me down.

Yes, it's an excellent lens, including superb close-focus capability.

I'll second your vote on the TG series. I consider these water/shock/compression proof cameras to be a photographic necessity because I am so often in environments adverse to conventional cameras.

This one was taken with a distant predecessor to the TG series, an Olympus 1030SW, which was my first ever digital camera. I still have it, and it works just fine. I have two other more recent such cameras, but I chose this image to show what this 10mp camera can do. While this was a very calm day (as shown by the surf), I was still standing in sand, and of course this was in salt air. Peace of mind while taking photographs is of great value to me. I want to be able to enjoy the experience of being there and getting the photograph, not just the end product, which is the print I make.

While able to be carried in a pocket, that is not how I carry mine, but that is an individual decision.

I have the Sony RX100VII and love it. It’s a superb camera with a great lens, amazing AF and a 1” type lens. Yes, it was expensive, but I could afford it at the time. I was deciding between it, the Canon G5X II and the G7X II, and went with the Sony for the extra zoom range. It fits in a shirt pocket and my entire kit fits in a small bag, weighs very little and takes up little space. While I tend to use my iPhone 13 Pro Max a lot, the Sony is what I take when I go somewhere. The only advantage of the iPhone is that it’s handy because I always have it with me.

I am very much appreciative of the response to my question/quest. I'm replacing a Sony DSC-W230 which is 15 years old and hopelessly outdated. Nevertheless, it's been a good companion and still works flawlessly. Before starting this topic, I had no idea of the number of models available. Your input is meaningful as I plod through the on-line reviews of those cameras you have mentioned or recommended. Fortunately, I not in a rush but I've got the bug to finish this search and will let you know what I come up with.

BTW, I'm not so interested in a long reach as I am wide angle. Connectivity and EVF are emphasis's (what's the plural of emphasis?), among others, I'm pursuing. Thanks for your help.

Look at pop-up flash and a moveable rear screen, if relevant.

There hasn't been much discussion lately about true pocket cameras. (Ones you can actually slip into a front pocket or cargo pants side pocket.) I know cell phones have encroached in this domain, but I curious if hoggers have a preference as to currently offered models and which one is the best.

I’m currently on a bus in Amsterdam. In my right front pocket I comfortably carry a Canon G7X Mark III. A 24-70 2.5 lens with 20 MP and shoots RAW.

I chose the lower cost, faster lens and simplicity over the longer lens of the Sony.

I used a Canon G11 for a few years until a thief took it from my truck. Did not replace it yet as I don't like cameras without a view finder. Canon G 11 & 12 were great cameras.

Viewfinders tend to be too small in pocket cameras - but to my mind are essential for professional work.
Sorry to hear of your bad experience.

As you can see, I have 2 pocket models, both Panasonic Lumix. The DMC-ZS100 is for the 1" sensor and I love it. I got it before the ZS200 came out. The DCZS80 is for the wide range zoom lens, and I love it too. Both have viewfinders which I insist on. Both are a little large for pocket use and require large pockets. I chose the ZS80 over the HX99 due to worries I'd break the 99's pop-up viewfinder. All have wider zoom ranges than the models with 25-75 or so lenses - I'm a fan of wide range zooms.

Couldn't agree with you more... viewfinders are an essential for me, as well. I have a G16 that I converted to IR. Still a workhorse. The EVF is why I chose the G1x iii and why its only competition for me was the G5x ii.

By the way, you still find decent early G series cameras on MPB.

The go to camera is the Canon G7X. Wish the weight was lighter. Great pictures for short trips with an easy carry. Carrying the backpack loaded with cameras and lens plus accessories can be daunting and setup time consuming.

I have the G15 and love, love, love it as well as the Canon G9XII with it's 1" sensor.
