With the advent of AI processing, we have a wide range of superzoom compact cameras with grain-of-sand sensors, even 10 year old images can be cleaned, sharpened, and upped in resolution.

My Panasonic TZ100 has a one-inch sensor and internal computing that would put a 1980 IBM Roomsize computer to shame. [Canon, Sony, Nikon followed suite]

By adding a low-cost adapter it can use 52mm filters and lens extenders. The Zoom is 10x, 25-250mm. It has a 3 ring circus of abilities, most remarkable to me is the Burst imaging that allows capturing of active events and one can grab a still of 8 mp that can be made "professional" with AI post-processing. My cost was $500 5 years ago.

On my "wish list" is the TG-6 or TG-7. Waterproof, 7' drop proof, 11X macro, ring flash attachment, etc. And will easily fit in one's pocket. Not as sophisticated as larger cameras but offers more than a smartphone as far as I am concerned.

I have the TG 6. Use it kayaking and boating

There hasn't been much discussion lately about true pocket cameras. (Ones you can actually slip into a front pocket or cargo pants side pocket.) I know cell phones have encroached in this domain, but I curious if hoggers have a preference as to currently offered models and which one is the best.

I carry my Nikon S9600 pocket camera in my car to use when needed. 16mp and very nice images.

I have a Canon Powershot A1200 (also available as slightly upgraded A1300). Certainly not in the SLR field . . . but quite a credible piece considering it's low price and it will fit in my shirt pocket hanging on a neck strap . . . probably still available used for under $100. I think it is much nicer to use as a real camera, that has a genuine viewfinder than most all cell phones have.

I use the Sony HX-99. 24-720 mm Zeiss lens, shoots RAW, 4 way panoramic, pop up viewfinder, auto fill flash. Fits in your pocket or belt pouch. Did I mention it takes very sharp images, I have enlarged many to 20X30 without issue.
How serious are you?
Currently in stock, but not for long.

I direct my coin towards my primary line of equipment.

If I need a small camera...I use my cellphone.

I've been shooting my pocket-sized Canon Powershot G9Xii more than any other of my film & digital cameras. At 20MP capturing in RAW, with IBIS, it does a wonderful job, better than my phone. Both Canon and Sony offer these cameras, sized roughly the same as a deck of cards.

I quite often use my Canon G7X III more than my Canon R cameras. It is pocketable, and always in my cars center console.

Before it chose to give up its ghost, my go to pocketable was a Canon Powershot S100. I went shopping for a G5x ii (definitely pocket worthy) in a local camera store. There, I noticed a like new Canon G1x iii in their used area. It has an APS-C sensor, 24-70 equivalent lens, semi-pocketable, EVF… only wish the lens was a little brighter, but it is still my go to travel camera since I discovered that the vast majority of my pics were/are in the 24-70mm range. The R5 stays home. I personally think you can’t lose with any of the Canon G?x series compacts, Sony R100s, Olympus TG-5 or 6, or LUMIX ZS series. Another recommendation is “shop refurb or used” via the various merchants out there. Be patient! And new are available but at premium prices since most manufacturers haven’t updated their compacts since before Covid. Good luck!

I love my Sony RX100v . I have recently looked into the Sony HX99 for more reach but you give up a bit of image quality. But they are still better than a cell phone. The Sony RX100v and RX100vii are a bit pricy. The HX99 is reasonable. Both are slightly larger than a deck of cards.

If money is no object then the Sony RX100vii is the Best pocket camera you can buy! I own this camera so I’m not just reading off the internet.

[quote=R.G.]Olympus Pen E-P7 with Lumix 12-32mm (24-64 equiv). Small enough to go in a fleece pocket. M4/3 sensor, IBIS.

Like you my pocket camera is not a point and shoot but the Olympus Pen EP-5. Like yours it has interchangeable lenses, IBIS, an easy bracketing function and very pleasant colors. I tend to use it with a Panasonic 14-45 lens.
Here is a shot I made yesterday while on Tamiami Trail (Highway 41) at a popular tourist place. The zoom was set to 18mm, equivalent to 36mm with a so called full frame camera.

Yes, the RX100 ( VI/VII) is the accepted pinnacle of pocket cameras - best lens speed for it's wide range - which allows to hold the ISO down - not to mention the SHARP Zeiss lens .....Yes, there are faster lenses but with much smaller range.

"Best" in this case is relative. The Sony is a nice camera and when I bought my G7 the Sony was the last camera I rejected. In the end for me it came down to the lenses. The lens on the Canon is the better choice for me. Both have the same wide angle of view (24mm equiv.) The Sony has a larger zoom range 8.3x to the Canon's 4.2x. But everything has a price and to pay for that larger zoom range the Sony lens is slow -- 1.3 stops slower than the Canon, max f/2.8 for the Sony, max f/1.8 for the Canon. So it was a choice between larger zoom range versus faster max aperture. For me the +1.3 stops max aperture made the G7 my best choice pocket camera.

And for me the faster lens was and is the better choice. It depends on who we are and what we want to photograph.

I too wanted a small camera capable of being pocket carried. After seeing billnikon's pics that he took with his Sony HX99, I bought one. It is a great little camera. I have pre ordered a Fujifilm X100VI, while it's not as small as the HX99, it has a fast f2 fixed 23mm (35mm FF equivalent), IBIS, 40mp, and it is pocketable in a jacket, or cargo pockets, but a little pricey at $1600.
