I’ve challenged myself with the one lens outing. Although I’m carrying a DSLR, I’ll add to the challenge by imagining that I only have a roll of 24 ASA 400 loaded.

Yes, only using one ISO or a film camera would be the ultimate challenge ...

When Ansel Adams was asked what was the most important part of his photo process - the film, lens, camera, darkroom, printing, etc. - his response was "the 12 inches behind the viewfinder". The man knew what he was talking about!

How did you find this information?

The average photographer is always at his best.

I find plenty of challenge in doing photography without restricting myself to what was available in the past. I do often use a single focal length lens, which is a macro lens. But I won't give up my zooms because sometimes I can't zoom with my feet, and I could miss some good shots.

I have often thought of doing this but never got around to it. I think its main value would be in forcing you to "make" a photograph instead of trying to capture every interesting thing that comes along. It also emphasizes the fact that each lens focal length has its own value, depending on the situation.

This is an interesting dialogue that proves good pictures can be taken with ordinary cameras. No argument there…. Einstein said ‘ make it as simple as possible, but no simpler.’ (I have no idea who came up with the KISS metaphor, but that’s just shallow thinking.) However, the dialogue lacks nuance. I have been a photographer for many decades, and I worked as a professional photographer throughout college and for several years thereafter. When I don’t have a camera with me, I have taken good photographs with my iPhone. But the fact of the matter is cameras like my Sony A7Riv and Oly EM1X with pro lenses provide significant potential benefits over my iPhone. All other things being equal, they take superior images than my iPhone. There are also Tactile benefits, particularly with my Sony. It’s like the difference between driving a Tacoma versus a Mercedes. The experience of using any fine piece of equipment can be an elegant and joyful experience.

Using a "good" camera set to Auto is P&S. So, no one has an excuse to buy a new camera.

You are what your exposure mode says you are.

Why would you need an excuse to buy a new camera? Saying you need it? Well that won't fly for the majority of the UHH members as unless you make a living with your camera you don't need a camera. But you like a new camera you buy it, you don't need an excuse.

Your first 10,000 images are your worst. That's when you should change to a better camera.

I am not sure I have taken 10,000 images yet. So I am still taking my worst images. That way I can expect to take a lot better images when I am done with 10,000.

Just last week I bought film for a 1930 era Rollex 20 camera. The shutter speed is 1/50 or bulb, f/5.6, ISO 100. Try making decent indoor & outdoor image when time is your only variable.
I'm hoping the camera don't have any light leaks.

1/50th...seriously, I would get a beanbag. They are incredibly effective, inexpensive and simple to use. If the camera does not have any serious issues, you can probably shoot at 1/50th and get sharp images.
