I really appreciate that info. and others on the forum have attested to that but I would much rather spend the time photographing and enjoying the adventures than developing. Also, we have a very small home and there's really no convenient place to develop film. I started this photography adventure late in life about seven years ago. I'm 67yrs. old and in really good health both physically and mentally. I'm ALWAYS studying this passion to get better. I'm currently learning how to use my sekonic L-858-D meter for film as well as digital photography. I've shot a couple of weddings, sporting events, portraits, baby showers and more......I've come a long way in a short time span but there's so much more to learn. I'm ALWAYS seeking advice and suggestions from people on this wonderful forum and you need to know how much I appreciate you and your suggestions. Thank you again for your help and recommendations.

God Bless,
A. T.

If you shoot in color either slides or color negatives there is no need to develop the film yourself. You don't want to deviate from standard development any way. Making prints is differrent but if you're going to scan then yeah send the film out for development.

My plans are to shoot in both color and B&W but the majority will be B&W.

I am not not good in B&W but if I do shoot in B&W I would certainly develop the film myself. The labs don't give you a discount for B&W yet chemistry for B&W is a lot cheaper and easier to do as you don't have to keep a very tight temperature.

His books are classics. I have them in my nightstand and read them periodically as a refresher for landscapes and composition.

As I recall, he used mostly Panatomic-X which was ASA 25 or 32 I think. He shot a lot of large format landscapes so he used slow shutter speeds on a tripod with a wide depth of field. The zone system is perfect for that.

Nowadays, you get more creative freedom and control with a mirrorless camera that provides a great preview for tough lighting situations.

If you're going to shoot film in your Hasselblad, I recommend you buy a good spot meter like an old Sekonic. Get a spot reading on the subject to expose for zone 5 (50% gray).

I recently purchased Ansel Adam's book, "The Negative" specifically to understand and learn to apply the zone system of exposure. I just reached the chapter on the Zone System and though I shoot digitally, I'm finding that this system is amazing and can definitely be an added bonus. I also recently purchased a top mint condition Hasselblad 500CM that I'm over the moon excited to start using; however, there are some things that I need to learn about film photography. I've become a student once again and it's truly exciting.

The Zone System works best with sheet film, where every exposure can be custom processed. Trying to do it with roll film ensures that compromises will have to be made, unless you have the same exposure objective with every frame on the roll.

When I was learning the Zone System I bought a used Speed Graphic and later a 4x5 studio model from a yard sale in Beverly Hills. The lady was selling her late brother's gear from his portrait studio and sent notices to the Photo Departments of all the Colleges and Universities in Los Angeles. I was looking at it, and she asked if I wanted it. I told her I only had $35 on me. "It is yours, all the money is going to a charity."
