Often drivers leave the scene of an accident because they do not want to get caught driving under the influence. It is my opinion that if this person is caught, they should be charged severely -- much harsher punishment than what they would receive for DUI. If they make the penalties harsh enough, maybe they would think twice about leaving the scene of an accident. All the punishment a DUI would entail plus make the punishments for a longer period. The punishment of DUIs at present is not severe enough. Sometimes you hear of people having had three or more DUIs. This shouldn't happen. People with more than one DUI should be banned from driving for five years, not just fined or given thirty days in jail only to be allowed to endanger the public again.
Is it any different than letting a murderer out of jail after only ten years? Too often you hear of these people committing murder again. A person prone to driving intoxicated is a time bomb and could go off at any time.
