"SAUGERTIES, N.Y. — Two Malden residents have been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run crash that killed Starllie Swonyoung, Saugerties Police said Tuesday night.
Lacy L. Maxwell, 42, was charged with the felonies of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, insurance fraud, staging a motor vehicle accident and tampering with physical evidence, the department said.
Ryan M. Maxwell, 43, was charged with the felonies of insurance fraud, staging a motor vehicle accident and tampering with physical evidence, according to the announcement."

Another college student was killed a few nights after that incident, but the police haven't made any progress. Both students were walking at night in the same direction as the traffic.

Often drivers leave the scene of an accident because they do not want to get caught driving under the influence. It is my opinion that if this person is caught, they should be charged severely -- much harsher punishment than what they would receive for DUI. If they make the penalties harsh enough, maybe they would think twice about leaving the scene of an accident. All the punishment a DUI would entail plus make the punishments for a longer period. The punishment of DUIs at present is not severe enough. Sometimes you hear of people having had three or more DUIs. This shouldn't happen. People with more than one DUI should be banned from driving for five years, not just fined or given thirty days in jail only to be allowed to endanger the public again.

Is it any different than letting a murderer out of jail after only ten years? Too often you hear of these people committing murder again. A person prone to driving intoxicated is a time bomb and could go off at any time.

I see far too many people walking at night wearing dark or black clothes. They are usually walking with the traffic and near the road. I've almost hit a couple of people who were either too close to the road or stepped out on the pavement to avoid something on the side. People also seem to have their heads in their cell phones far too often to know what's going on around them. Both drivers and pedestrians have to be very aware of their surroundings.

The driver of the car is in jail, but not her hubby. He helped to fake a crash to account for the damage to the car.

Maybe people should wear "dash cams."

On my way home from work I had to go left of center to avoid some nut jogging just off the yellow center line in my lane. He looked about late 20's or early 30's. We may soon be reading his name in the Obituarys.

I don’t understand WHY people don’t walk against the traffic. At least then you have a fighting chance of moving out of the way of a vehicle about to hit you. Last year we had a neighbor get hit walking home at night with his wife. He was instantly killed and she fortunately was untouched. They were walking WITH the traffic.
As an aside, he was hit by a defrocked ex-priest (for child molestation) who was drunk. Got a five year prison sentence.

I ride my bike a lot…2000ish miles a year and if I’m on a busy road and there is no sidewalk I always ride against the traffic…because that way you can see the texting jerks and bail if need be. The law here in FL says to ride with traffic but fortunately there’s an exception that says you can do whatever you feel is safest.

I read your post and visualize you as quite ignorant of the disabilities that are progressive and non revisable . I am 86 years old and had both knees replaced at 55- wow - no problems , no scooter or aids needed the the day I turned 85 WHAM - blood clots hit my lungs and I'm hooked to oxygen 24/7 and need a scooter for anything other than in the house. My wife of 67 yrs has progressively lost mobility for over 35 yrs because of arthritis - she is one of those you talk of who exercise does not help and they end up not being out and about other than going to a Dr.
Count your blessing you are not in health such as us.

Definitely. Every time I drive through a parking lot, there's someone holding up traffic while staring at his cell phone.
