I've been reading here for yrs. but recently got my first DSLR, Nikon D3300 (used) that came with the Nik. DX-VR 18-55mm- 3.5-5.6GII lens, and an Albinar 80-200 lens. I'm still a rank beginner. My 1st few shots with the 18-55 were "ok" when I but the Albinar on, I kept getting the "no lens attached" msg. After much research I discovered this was NOT an automatic lens, (no electronic contact points) and could only be used on full manual. I never considered there were such things. I'd like to get a zoom 50-70 (or close) to 200 or preferably 300mm, for the Least cost possible, without sacrificing "much" quality. Nikon has a 55-300, and 70-300 VR lens I've seen. I can only afford a used one. I'd like suggestions for the best for a somewhat inexpensive price. I'd like suggestions on what may be the best for me. I am still a rank amateur, know the basic ideas, but still have much to learn. These shots were my first time out in Big Cypress Fl., all shot on auto.

A VR-enabled Nikon 70-300 is a reasonable choice, especially a used copy.

Agreed !

We have among us some fools who will try to put a really long birding lens into the hands of a beginner. 300mm is PLENTY !!!

With only moderate cropping, his bird photo shows that a well done "Wheres Waldo ?" pic, with interesting surroundings, is much better than the "same old same old" 600mm bird "portrait" that looks exactly like every other long lens "portrait" that too many thousands of birders have already done and done again, and really just done to death. OPs version invokes user participation, its interactive. A viewer must invest a little something into it.

Bending the rules for good cause, Ive illustrated that right below:

This would be about 100mm using OPs camera
This would be about 100mm using OPs camera...

I have a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR Autofocus IF Lens that I don't use any more. I'll part with it for $125 plus shipping. Has hood & caps. If I can find a carrying case I'll throw that in also.

Thanks. I still wonder what lens will fit on my cam, or what won't. I don't need a zoom less that 55mm, or so, but still debating 200 or 300mm max. I know I'll want the 300 "sometimes." Do any lens other than a Nikon have VR?

I'll seriously consider that. I live in Sunrise Fl., near Ft. Lauderdale.

That was shot with the 18-55mm lens (at 55mm). I still haven't practiced enough to get a decent shot with the 80-200 Manual lens. (Which a few months ago, didn't know existed.) This shot is aprox. the same scene taken at 18mm. On auto, handheld out the window of my van.

nice shots of the Glades.

I'm using a (borrowed) Nikon D3400 because my old D40 doesn't seem to like any of the newer lenses that I mount on it. Seems the auto-focus doesn't like "new stuff" attached. I'm probably having the same problem as you are.
So.....I'm saving my pennies up for a D7500, Nikon. I love that tilting viewer screen. It will work great at ball games and parades, when people like to suddenly stand up in front of your lens and ruin the shots.

Thanks for the good info. Gators generally won't bother you unless you jump on or fall on top of one. I've fished in boats surrounded by them; they only attacked bobbers. This newbie (to a DSLR, not this forum) appreciates all comments and info.

Keep the Albinar! It is a learning experience to shoot full manual!
I just acquired a 50 mm 1.8 E series Lens for my D3100. Using it brought me back to my film days!

Of course, we are still spoiled now, with "FREE " film and instant replay to guide your shots.

The generic name for VR is OIS (optical IS).
Tamron calls it VC. Sigma calls it OS. If you post a question that is NOT brand or model name specific, best to use the generic "OIS" (to foil our rhetorical snipers). Example: "Is OIS really useful with wide angle zooms ?" (Spoiler Alert: "It depends .... ")

As a newbie you are doing very well and I join Thomas recommending that you keep the kit lens you have now. Since you are looking for an economic lens the 55-200 will also serve you well. I had one and it gave me beautiful images before I updated to the 70-300 VR-S which is considerably more expensive and obviously a better lens.

Right now your primary goal should be to learn basic photography and there is plenty of information online. Learn exposure and get familiar with ISO and what shutter speeds and lens openings (apertures) are capable of doing creatively. All that information will enhance your photography.
Good luck.

Nice serie ...even if shot on Auto! Arn't You afraid of dangerous "subjects"?
I often take pictures with a D7200 + Nikkor AF-S 55-200 GII ED VR
This lens is
- not expensive
- quite lightweight, not at all cumbersome
- sharp up to 200 mm! (the most used F.L. !)
- quick to focus accurately!
OK, the F.L. is a bit short for wild life and birds...but one can crop the image if required.
OK, this is not a "quick" tele lens (f/5.6 @200 mm = not ideal in low light) but don't be afraid to crank up the ISO if needed: better a bit noise than no picture...and one can easily get rid of noise with post treatment!
OK, it is not water proof, so avoid shooting session while wet weather...or protect the gear with a plastic bag.
OK, handel it carefully as it is made mainly of plastic= not built like a tank.
But, for less than 150 USD, You get a more than decent lens able to fill a large part of Your needs.

I fully agree with the wise comment "Thomas902" wrote.

Strongly suggest a 70-300 VR, many used on eBay or new. New one will not break the bank too bad.
