I think the simplicity of the subject and the beauty of the colors outweigh the centered horizon, although Frank does have an interesting suggestion of a vertical orientation.

Crop to vertical and a bit of straightening for me too.👍

I'm an iconoclast by nature and training so you're asking the wrong person. Beautiful shot, don't change a thing.

Iconoclast are some of my favorite people.....although I don't trust many of them. lol Thanks for the input. Glad you liked the photo.

If I was anticipating that kind of response from a judge, I wouldn't enter it. It has been decades since I entered club competitions or other, and can't imagine having to think about what they like, what "rules" they think are important and so forth.

The colors and graceful tree silhouette are breathtaking. The aspect does feel a little off for me, though. Not the issue you mention, but the lack of balance. I'd love to see a small group of birds in distance on the left or a more 16:9 aspect (more real estate on the left). I'd have no issue with creating that, but I know that is not what this thread is about

That's interesting. In the original, there was more space on the left; but it was the same as you see and I thought it was too much negative space. That is why I went with a more square aspect. I'll go back and look at some other cropping ideas. Thanks for the valuable input.

Perhaps Vertical shot. Than maybe the horizon being in the center would not so much of an issue to a judge.

I only mentioned the assumed judge's response because that is the type of comments we get often. Doesn't mean I'm inclined to change my photo because of it. Linda's idea is intriguing; but I don't think I'm going to go with a vertical on this one. Thanks for the input.

I agree with your assessment of judging; and I must say, I kind of understand their point. Horizons are always a problem with me. You are right, the damned thing is all wonky!!! I'll fix it. Thanks.
Erich

I think you should submit it
Really nice shot. And BTW….. I recently submitted a photo with a horizon problem and it generated 3 pages of comments. They often create problems for me

Or he might say the tree is nicely positioned on the thirds, but I doubt it. I like it as art piece.

I decided that the horizon would stay. I did, however, crop the empty area on the right of the frame which made the whole thing a vertical orientation. That helped take the emphasis off the horizon. I ended up with 3rd place in the Salon group which is the highest in our club. Thanks for your input.

The solution was to crop so that it was more of a portrait orientation. Ended up with a 3rd place. I'm pretty pleased with that. Thanks for the input.

Erich, I'd have thought you'd crop on the left of the frame, but you clearly said right side. Could you post the one you submitted for judging, just to help out this easily confused old fool? And I'd love to see the winner in any event.

Yes, that would work - and did.
