I have Windows 7 and would like to upgrade to 10 or 11 and have no idea how to. What's problems would be involved?

First you need to check if 10/11 will run on the system.
I had to replace my computer after 10+years, it wouldn't run 10 or 11.
(I'd skip v10 if you can.)
Microsoft's website may offer a check to see of your computer is capable of installing an upgrade.

Most likely a Windows 7 system would run Windows 10 but not Windows 11. Windows 11 requires CPU which is quite new and I doubt that any of those system came with Windows 7. Up to about 1 and a half year ago you can upgrade a Windows 7 to Windows 10 simply by downloading Windows 10, make a bootable USB thumb drive and do the install. I don't know if you can still do that.

Someone's got to do it, right? Install Linux.

Been there, and have done that multiple times, and I could not find a distro that I liked enough or that worked in a way that worked for me. With one exception and that was PopOS which I have installed on an older laptop. It didn't replace Win 11 in my case but did have promise. I have not experienced any significant issues with Win 11 and the ones that I had have been largely corrected in updates.

Win11 requirements - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-check-if-your-device-meets-windows-11-system-requirements-after-changing-device-hardware-f3bc0aeb-6884-41a1-ab57-88258df6812b

The minimum system requirements for running Windows 11 on a PC are as follows:

Processor (CPU):
A 1 GHz or faster processor with 2 or more cores.
The processor must appear on the list of approved CPUs.
Memory (RAM):
At least 4 GB of RAM.
Storage:
A 64 GB or larger storage device.
System Firmware:
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) and Secure Boot capable.
Trusted Platform Module (TPM):
TPM version 2.0.

Please note that these are the minimum requirements to ensure a great computing experience with Windows 11. Specific features, apps, and additional hardware you add to your PC may exceed these minimum requirements. If your PC doesn’t meet these criteria, consider upgrading components like RAM or storage to meet the requirements. For more details on feature-specific requirements, consult the Windows 11 specifications page or check with specific publishers or manufacturers.

This is the most likely reason why the OP computer will not run Windows 11. I think the oldest processor in the list was released around 2019 or 2020. A computer made around that time would come with Windows 10 and not Windows 7 (of course unless the owner wanted to downgrade it for some reason).

Interesting.
My wife went from 10 to 11 with no problem (dislikes).
I went from 7 to 11, so I have no ideas what 10 was like.

Also remember, some of your older software may no longer run. Even some devices, portable hard drivers, cameras, etc. They just don't make drivers for them.

I can tell the difference. There are differences but minor and I don't see that Windows 11 is better or worse.

If your system can handle the newer O/S, you can clone your c:\ drive and upgrade there. If you don't like it, you can always put the old drive back.
