So let me see if I have this straight, it’s ok, cool or even admirable for a photographer to shoot film with an old “retro” film camera that can only use manual focus lenses.

And it’s also ok or even cool to shoot digital with a mirrorless camera with the latest ergonomic design and state of the art internals.

But it’s not cool whatsoever to use mirrorless digital that looks like a 50 year old camera on the outside but has the most modern innards. And it’s even less cool, or maybe even crazy to use that modern camera with old manual lenses, many with image quality equal to or better than modern lenses.

I guess I’m missing something somewhere. Oh wait, in the car world it’s cool to have an 80 year old body setting on a modern drive train with all the creature comforts of modern cars. Don’t those crazy people know that to truly enjoy their car, it has to look modern on the outside as well? I just thought of something else, what about those idiot deer hunters that use black powder muskets for hunting? Don’t they know modern rifles are far superior? They need to get on UHH to learn the error of their ways.

I thought to check your posting history to see if you knew anything about mirrorless topics discussed in this thread. I found this recent item that seems to confirm: no

Rockwell’s review helped me decide not to buy the Zf.

I certainly appreciate the personal attention you’ve shown me, but nowhere on that post is mirrorless mentioned. If you’re making a point, please elaborate because I don’t get it.

If you’re talking about the image quality on that post, without going into extreme detail (again) I’ll just say that iPhone security prevents me from downloading files from the computer to the phone and the phone is the only internet access I have. Hence snapping a photo of the computer screen.

Other than that, I know without a doubt that you are far more knowledgeable on digital than I am. However, that doesn’t always make your personal preference preferable. You may consider contacting Nikon and tell them what a marketing mistake they are making. I’m sure they would also appreciate your input. Besides, what do they know, all they do is sell cameras and other optical instruments worldwide.

The problem isn’t the iPhone, it’s the user not understanding any of the many ways to transfer photos to his phone.

Sorry, my son with a degree in computer science says it’s iPhone security. He builds computers, writes code and is the IT guy at a local college.

If you can give me instructions on how to circumvent that, I’d really appreciate it and I’m sure my son would too. It’s no problem to download from the phone to the computer but not the other way around. Help me fix this, please!

Think about it.

The overwhelming majority of the market-leading, cutting-edge Apple phone user population doesn't have this same problem. A simple browse of the UHH Photo Gallery and / or the Phone Photography sections rarely show any un-rotated images like yours. The google machine of accumulated human knowledge almost surely has the answer. But, you need to do the work, to define the specifics of your issue and equipment / operating systems involved.

Refine this basic search with your specifics. Investigate the results. Find and determine and practice the applicable solution.

Google how to rotate <iphone> images to post from <xx> computer

where <iphone> might need to refer to your phone version and <xx> is your MAC or Windows version type

I have the Zf, my first mirrorless. I have the D810 and D850. Took the Zf with the 40mm f2 to the park and fell in love with it. I set it up using Henry Hudson’s advice. The EVF was amazingly bright with rich color and contrast. I love that while looking through the viewfinder, you can use your right thumb to move the focus point. The dials are intuitive and allow you to change settings in an instant. Compared to the D850, it is much lighter and smaller. I needed to buy an old school look half leather case to give me a proper grip.

Joe, may I ask what you would choose if the choice was between your Zf and the 850? That's the decision I am trying to make at the moment. I have the Df, and I love the retro look and simplicity (I cut my photo teeth on film Nikons and Leicas), but I would have preferred a Zf with the D850 sensor and no AA filter. It seems for some reason Nikon wants to handicap their retro cameras when it comes to resolution. The cost is about the same for a new Zf and a decent used D850. I also have tons of Nikkor lenses and no Z lenses at this point.
Thanks.

Yeah, I’ve been building computers and writing code for 40 years. I’m an IT guy with the federal government. You have an iPhone? You have an iCloud account. You can log into your iCloud account from your PC and upload the photos to your iCloud and they’ll automatically sync with your phone. You could also use Google Photos. You can use iTunes. You can actually just connect your iPhone to your PC through a USB port and drag the photos to the iPhone icon in Windows Explorer.

IIRC, he did push me toward the my Z6&7.

OTOH his mighty attempt to push me away from Voigtlander lenses didnt prevent my buying seven of them (so far).

Some Hawgsters knock Ken, but then youll see the same Hawgs asking the Klown Kar about purchasing advice. Duuuhhhh ??!!??

Sometimes just for fun, I'll pull out my FM3a, throw some film in it, and shoot if I see something I really like. Don't want to waste film on snapshots. I use my Nikon D850 for that.

You can’t beat the D850. I’m guessing the Z8 is the mirrorless equivalent to the D850, the Zf obviously is not. If I’m traveling for photography, the D850 is going. I like the size and weight of the Zf and the EVF. I intend to use the Zf as a pocket camera, i.e, a more sophisticated cellphone camera ready to go when we stop on the road for a quick photo. The resale price of the D850 and D810 make them a super bargain, especially when you have a bag of lenses.

I was unaware of the Zf having an AA filter. I dont fuss over the rezo issue but I use verrrry short Voigtlanders which is my main reason in choosing the Z line (very thin sensor stacks).

Slightly ironic that the retro bodies are less suitable for my retro lenses.

A third party adapter without AF function but with a servo to use the auto iris in AI lenses would be Very Good Thing.

Not sure about the metering, and dont much care either way. My Z with non-updated FW has no metering scale with vintage lenses. It can show a histogram down in the corner if "show effect" is enabled so no hey problemo.

Thanks for the info. Yes I have an iPhone but I do not have internet access from my PC. It’s either dial up at 26kb/sec (not mb) or $120 a month for Hughes Net satellite service. The Hughes folks said that sometimes they run specials forgoing the $500 setup fee. I said thanks but no thanks.

My son tried using his iCloud account and both my iPhone and his Apple phone would download images into the account. He could upload images back into his Apple but not into my iPhone.

I’ve tried using a patch cord between my phone and the PC. My computer will recognize the phone, allowing me to download files onto the PC from the phone. However, the phone does not recognize the PC whatsoever. It’s as if the connection to the PC isn’t even there.

You seem quite knowledgeable on this subject and with that much experience I’m hoping you might know what the problem is. Is there a special setting in my phone that prevents me from downloading data or my phone from recognizing the PC? My phone service is through AT&T. Could the inability to download be from the provider? I am able to receive photos by text and email without any problem, so it’s not something specific to photos.

Thanks!
