Sad, but true. The story of this young fellow has been on several programs. Also true is the need to wash the vegetables you intend to eat. The reason is that the vegetables are most often grown in "fecal fields" of fertilizer. They are also sprayed with pesticides and herbicides.
As the plant grows, the vegetable grows with it. The vegetable is covered with biofilm to protect it and to preserve moisture. The biofilm forms in layers so crud, bug-poop, chemicals, etc. get trapped under the layers of the film. As the saying goes, "You are what you eat" so the best practice is to wash your produce with a cleaner like "FIT" that dissolves the biofilm allowing the crud and bad stuff to be washed off.
