Are you sure Google was not just a sign-in option?

I use Ancestry and never had to sign in using Google.
Ancestry did however send a security code to my phone once to log in.
But I told it to remember me (my computer) and no longer need the two step verification for my computers. I think they may have done that to prevent sharing of login credentials. If I sign in using my daughter's account, it will probably sent the second step code to her phone........

I NEVER use Google as an alternate sign-in ANYWHERE.

Yes, it was - Google and Facebook. I did the regular sign-in, and then it said that in the future, I could also sign in with Google. It seems that almost every site I go to has a complicated sign-in procedure.

I used RoboForm for many years, until it failed me. I could not get it to work, and neither could they... I transferred everything to LastPass, and I now have all my logins in there. Other than a couple of sites which won't let me use the entry, everything works fine. For those few problem sites, I can always cut&paste from the program to the screen.

I use a spreadsheet. It's on paper. When something changes the spreadsheet gets updated, given a new name with the date so I know which one is most recent. The new spreadsheet goes in the file and the old one gets shredded.

So far I have seen no corruption of the paper copy.

I signed into something this morning, and I had to get a code via a phone call.

We use a loose-leaf address book (entries in pencil), and a PW protected spreadsheet on the computer.
(Over 200 entries so far, )

Agreed. I have a Google email account but NEVER use it to sign in to anything else. There are usually other options when signing into these other accounts.

I think two-step verification is a bother but I do feel more secure using it, especially when banking or paying bills online. My wife and I travel and often spend long periods away from our home so all our bills, statements, etc are received and paid online. This does offer some security when the accounts are linked to our phones.

And as you noted this may also be an attempt to cut down on shared credentials when multiple people try to share some type of accounts. Until a better system comes along I think we are stuck with it.

Have you noticed that it's getting more difficult to sign into many sites? The ID and password are no longer enough. They have to send a code, get answers to questions, or also sign into Google. I don't like this, especially when I have to find my cell phone, turn it on, wait for it to boot, and then look for the code.

I just signed into Ancestry to see more distant relatives, and I had to follow that up with a sign-in to Google.

Sometimes a little window opens & ask me if I want to sign in & continue with GOOGLE. I just close the window & keep going with no problems.

I hate the extra security too. It is so cumbersome. There is nothing I have that requires this much security.

I noticed that when I use a Private Mode in Firefox I had to go through a lot of hoops when logging into my “secure” sites like banking. Had to wait for the code every time I logged into my Chase account, then others started doing that.
I finally started using the “non-private” mode and most of that went away. I know I should use private mode but it IS a royal P.I.T.A.
On my iPhone, I usually just have to use facial recognition.

I use Notes on my iPhone to keep my PWs and that’s secured with facial recognition or 6 digit PIN code.

I only do internet work on a computer, extremely rarely on the phone.
