I seem to remember someone from Microsoft saying Win 11 would be the last version, they planned to just do updates forever.OOPS!!!

Perhaps they were a tad bit optimistic about being able to continue to update Windows 11 or they realized that with AI and other advancing technologies that model would not work. I would bet on the latter but who knows except the division of Microsoft that supports Windows OS and they are unlikely to make their reasoning public.

Where do you buy your floppy discs! 😀

I understand that in Japan they continue to use floppy discs for certain purposes to this day. I just read an article that reported that they are finally phasing them out. Maybe you can purchase floppies from a distributor in Japan.

I have a specific reason why I will not migrate to Win11 and it’s based on personal preference rather than performance.

I have multiple monitors side by side. I like to have my menu bar on the right side of my screen. In win10, you can place the menu bar on any edge you like. Not win11. It’s either top or bottom. Would have like to have upgraded but this has been a deal killer for me.

For what it's worth Microsoft has made the menu/taskbar placement more flexible in Windows 11 and there are inexpensive programs that you can install which will much of that flexibility back.

When Windows 11 came out, the update told me that my hardware was not worthy of running Windows 11. I'm OK with Windows 10 (heck, I was fine with Windows XP)!

I've resisted switching to it because there seem to be no advantages, but several disadvantages (which I don't recall).

I wonder why they couldn't keep the "Windows 10" name as they made changes. Wasn't that the idea when Win10 was introduced?

Windows 11 has continued to evolve via updates and most of those disadvantages have been resolved. I also find it to be very stable and compatible with all of the hardware and software that I moved over from Windows 10.

That was the idea. I have a theory. I thought that Microsoft when they offered free upgrade to Windows 10 they intended to get everyone on Windows 10 and then upgrading it gradually without changing its name. I think they intended to switch it over the subscription model so that you have to subscribe to get the update.
However, Windows 11 I think was an idea to sell hardware. If you want Windows 11 many people will have to buy new hardware. So I think the hardware manufacturers paid Microsoft to do that.

I am one who must build/buy a new desktop for Win 11. I can't afford to do that. I am not a fan of MS and their bullying ways.

I've been programming for over 50 years. I want to tell the computer what I want it to do, I don't want it thinking for me and trying to second guess me.

Just more crap so people don't have to think/reason/analyze anymore....
"Oh, let me see what my <phone/computer/smart watch> says to do."

Not scared, but fearful of where things are going.

I do not need my device listening in on my conversations and watching me remotely from China or any other country. I have nothing to hide and my life is an open book. But I am hanging on to every last vestage of individulism vs. collectivism that I can. I am not anti-social, I am anti-control. Free to critically think, make my own choices and act accordingly to my own discernment not what some dumbass or in this case, smart ass machine may think. I am watching my Grandchild grow up on an IPad (against my better judgement) and he is rapidly becoming socially unadjusted. He is only 8. Don't get me started because it won't end nicely. As far as shopping, learning, building, designing and dreaming... the only thing I need is my eyes, mind and Google. LOL

I am encouraged that there are still individuals who recognize the importance of being able to think critically because, at this time in history, I see so little evidence that it still exists in the general population. As far as privacy goes, the only way to truly achieve it would be to live off of the grid in a cabin in the wilderness.

I consider it a problem when I can't customize my start screen or relocate the taskbar. Win 11 was supposed to be a step forward NOT a step backwards in functionality!

I had issues with Windows 11 when I first started using it but now I would never consider going back to Windows 10.
Also, Microsoft has continued to provide more functionality to the OS and has provided more flexibility in customizing Windows 11. If that is not enough Stardock has a program named Start11 which allows one to further customize the Start Menu and Taskbar including changing it back to a Windows 10 style.

Right now I have a problem with Windows 11. It keeps trying to install the "2024-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems" and keeps failing.
It wastes CPU time and internet bandwidth to keep trying.

You can still use DOS via cmd.exe

And you can use UNIX from the Command Line interface of the Mac.

Aren't you glad you're not paying for CPU time and bandwidth?

Back in 1972, CPU time at university was $.10 a second.
We didn't have to "pay" for it, and I don't remember what happened if we exceeded our allotted semester limit.

Ever notice how fast Google returns searches?

Well I do pay for the internet bandwidth. Higher speed more money. Paying for fast CPU is kind of paying for CPU time.

Interesting.
I just get computers (they have some kind of speed), never had a problem, and whatever the base bandwidth is for my ISP is quite fast enough for our needs as I never see any delays.

Just think how much bandwidth effectively costs if you're hardly on the internet. The more you use it the less the effective cost per bits transferred. Same with CPU time I suppose.
24/7 use is the most cost effective. For a flat rate, as use goes up, effective cost goes down.
But I don't know anyone who tracks that.

It seems that Microsoft is now forcing users to accept the latest version of Windows.

However, you can avoid this forced update by pausing Windows 11 updates. Doing so will also prevent you from getting security updates and improvements. - https://www.minitool.com/news/users-are-forced-to-install-windows-11-updates.html
