You paid $2,100 for subscriptions last year, and now $10 is a huge amount of money?

You seem to have missed the point. People get suckered in by the offer of a "cheap" subscription. Over the course of a year, all those "cheaps" result in an "expensive" total.

I didn't miss the point. I'm only amazed that you never expected prices to increase over time. FYI, once upon a time, I only paid 33 cents for a gallon of gas!

I love Prime for free delivery, but have found their movie selection wanting. If there’s a movie on Prime that I can’t watch anywhere else, I just pay the fee and rent it. Otherwise, I’m not interested in their offerings. We pay for ad free Netflix, Hulu, Max and Showtime, so the only time we’re stuck with commercials is for real-time news services such as CNN. There is ad free news on Hulu, but not real time - typically at least 12 hours old.
Yesterday, I counted 12 commercials in a row on CNN, and they’re not the only ones, Otherwise interesting series on Bravo and Discovery are ruined with 5 minutes of commercials and 5 minutes of content. Over the air TV is limited in the amount of commercial time/hour by the FCC, but not cable/streaming services. Life is just too short to spend a substantial portion of a show watching commercials, so when it gets extreme, I just drop the show, and at some point perhaps they’ll associate a drop in viewers to the unreasonable increase in commercials (it appears to be getting worse) and reconsider. Vote with your remote. As to those services needing revenue to stay in business, the fact is that the streaming or cable services pay big $ to those content providers to carry their product.

Their paid and free change frequently. I watched a movie for free, and it was a rental a couple of weeks later.

Prices increase over time, but the prices of these streaming services, and I'll even throw in cable TV, are going up astronomically over time, and some of them are losing a lot of money anyway. I think that eventually some of them are bound to collapse. There may be too many streaming services on the market and only so many that people are willing to pay for every month out of their household budget.

You got that right. The market rewards businesses that can achieve acceptable return on investment. Those that can't make a profit in a highly competitive market will disappear--just like Blockbuster.

I agree. I also am paying the extra $2.99 per month. I get a lot of pleasure out of certain things in my retirement which I and my wife worked hard for and watching Prime movies (my wife falls asleep on the sofa half the time) is one of my pleasures along with streaming from Netflix, Paramount +, Apple +, etc. BTW, if you are paying subscription for Showtime, you'll get Paramount + free. You'll have to go online and "link" Paramount + to your Showtime subscription and if you have trouble, then call tech support and they will help you to do the "link". Other things I love in my retirement life is occasional eating out but wow, that has really gotten expensive. Another is my Nikon Z8 (not cheap either :). I'm tired of traveling; not only expensive but the hassle of airports , planes, all of it.

Completely in tune with everything you said, especially the air travel. It has become such a pain that I hope to never board another airplane. And thanks for the tip about Paramount.
Cheers

The price of Prime has risen regularly, and so have Amazon's profits. The only reason for the ads is to increase profit. I spent almost $1,500 on TV subscriptions last year, but I'm cutting back in 2024.

It is amazing to me…some of the old movie streamers will have 15 commercials in a row.
ALSO, I do not like the the volume is always increased for a commercial. Seems invasive.
NO FREE LUNCH, I dispute the person who said no free lunch. I am being seen by Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic and I sometimes have 3 days to schedule a flight…prices range up to $2500 for roundtrip for my wife and no direct flights and American Airlines is c r a m p e d seating. Alegent just announced direct flights for $58 - no kidding. A friend goes to Orlando, Fl, every year for $58 on Alegent and has never had a problem. Neither of the two fees makes any sense to me. For the high fee, yes you have to pay for each bag, no meal, NOTHING EXTRA.

For sure, Jerry! Amazon is a business. It exists for profit.
