I do too, especially this one when the leaves are off. Due to the gnarliness of the branches, you get a lot of different photographic "looks" depending on the angel from which you shoot. I have been taking shots of this guy for over twenty years.

If you want gnarly trees, find an old hedgerow of Osage orange (hedgeapple) trees in a rural area. They were planted close together not only for a windbreak but perhaps to function as fence posts too. The competition for light and nutrients makes them grow in all sorts of weird (wonderful?) ways. Just look out for the thorns.

Four blocks away from here, there is a row planted as a border in front of a condo complex. Oranges all over the place in the fall

I like the trees in the winter when their leaves have fallen. Love to see their bare twisty branches. Nice b/w shot Joe.

In the past twenty or so years, since digital, I have taken probably a hundred shots of this guy - all, as you say, when the leaves are off. It is so gnarly and full of personality, and no matter the point of view from where you take a shot, you are going to get something lovely A couple people said the shot was too busy. Well, that's the way it looks - and that is why I love it Life unfolding

Joe, sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you. If you really want to see a gnarly tree, check out a Harvy Lauder Walking Stick Tree especially in the winter with no leaves on.
