You're correct. 50% of the population of numbers used will not always be above or below the numerical average.

But this is what I replied to at the time "No, 50% of the population whose IQ is not average is below average."
That says the same thing as the comment to which he replied.
Re-read it???

Take the eight numbers 150, 75, 83, 47, 120, 30, 93, 64. The average is 82.75
Four of the eight numbers are below the average, 50% in THIS case.
We should be talking median, which may be different than the average.
Been too long since I used a median.

In your case it was only luck of the draw that gave you 50% above or below. Just add a 9th number such as 45 and divide by 9 and you again have the mean, but in this case you would have 4 above and 5 below the mean. What people are really talking about is the median. Mean, again is the arithmetic central tendency of the data set, Median is the central tendency of the dispersion of the population of which 50% is above the median and 50% is below. For instance you could have 15 people with IQs of 150, 23 with an IQ of 75, 14 with an IQ of 47, 2 with an IQ of 120, 6 with and IQ of 30, 100 with an IQ of 93, and 4 with an I Q of 64. You would still have a mean of 82.75, but the median would be significantly different.

There is some definite truth to this. Emotion drives a lot of decisions. Sometimes good, sometimes not so much. One of the reasons I stayed out of the stock market for so many years. Emotion drives stock prices as much as company performance.

Good observation on the market - 60 years ago the crash was closer to a recent memory and our parents might caution against the market having lived thru the devastating consequences.

I can see why it is there.
I saw mostly politically opinionated stupidity beyond disturbing. I thought it is shocking that people that should be mature, intelligent and open minded aware of realities in our world and country posting the stupidity and they vote and they breed !
It is more than the political social aspect but a reflection of how we can easily be manipulated.
Just look at the model vs. model posts here in main topic areas.
Well I wanted to share my experience and if this post winds up there, Ok, so what.
Yours truly,

Have never gone there and am not surprised. There are several members who should only be permitted to post in the ATTIC.

Robert, you said the truth based on history. I started to write this but since you brought up the though I will jump in and add that from my experience, so many people define themselves by belief systems they do not even understand.
When it especially comes to religion and politics, these are two heart felt belief systems so many people define themselves by and it becomes emotional over rational thinking when challenged or questioned about their beliefs and the things they do and even vote.
So we see this openly here on UHH. Just look at the treads about this camera model over that camera model. RAW vs. JPEG. Wow wee do have some fun here.
Let's keep it real.Bruce.

Folks, my opinion, the Attic is often good free entertainment. Occasionally you have to poke them with a stick to keep it going.

But there is a lot of valid thought there also, but manners-EH, Not So Much Doc!!!

PS: To those of you arguing about intelligence and IQ, I challenge you to try teaching Jr High or even High School for a while.

Hey, Robert....another person that understands the use of "eh!!" I used it once all alone as a response, "eh!!" Nobody knew what it meant. Now I've found somebody who does!! I don't feel like I was born in a field of corn anymore.

Yep, you need to have been raised on Saturday Morning Cartoons with Bugs, Daffy, Tweedy Bird, Sylvester, The Chipmunks and company. Followed of course by the rest of the day being old Western, War and Detective Movies. Followed by the yucky mushy ones for Mom in the evening.

What's wrong with corn fields? You can take a .22 and shoot crows, let the dogs chase rabbits and pick a few ears to boil or roast.

And if next to a pond and woodlot you get fresh fish, an ear of corn, a camp fire, some green twigs to put the corn and fish over the fire to roast. No need to walk all the way back to the farmhouse for lunch. And the dog happily cleans up the mess from cleaning the fish (save a piece or two for bait so you have some fresh fish to take to Mom or Grandma at the farm house for dinner.

I used to think that the Attic was hidden from public view. I was wrong. People without UHH accounts can find it and read the posts if they know where to look. I discovered this today by logging out as a test. I don't follow the attic, but sometimes a post will be moved there. Some seem innocuous, but many posts there are inflammatory. I personally think that such posts should be deleted, not moved.

Yes, but who decides what is or is not inflammatory, you? me? someone neither of us like? or we like and many others can't stomach? Perhaps it would be better for us just to move on or not visit a place that we know will not be to our liking. Thanks.
