For my MBP, and now my Air M2, I'm still using a Samsung T5 (or a T7 upon occasion). Normally, I'm using this for tethered capture. Absolutely NO issues. My Mac Studio Ultra uses a OWC SSD drive to store my Lightroom catalog (TB4) and another, larger OWC SSD system (TB3) to store the working copies of my current images. What you use/buy depends on what job(s) it will be asked to perform and how much you want to spend. Everything else spins. Best of luck.
I have a Samsung 2T for an external for my 2023 MacBook Pro. I’m quite happy with it.
For an external that is going to be moved around, I would prefer an SSD. If you drop an SSD, no big deal. If you drop an HDD, you start shopping for another one.
Lots of good information here. I've used both SSD and spinners and am in the process of switching to SSD's except for redundant storage. When traveling I use 2 SSDs attached to my MacBook M2. One drive contains a "Traveling" LR catalog and the other is for automatic copies of the files when I import from a memory card into LR. The benefit is I have 3 copies of my images - one on each drive and one on the card and I keep them in different bags. Good Luck!
Let me add to this request. Some years ago, I saw advertised an external drive designed for travel photographers when a laptop was not readily available. If I recall correctly, you removed your memory card and inserted it into the external drive, and you were able to download your data directly into this drive without having to use a computer. If you chose, you could free up storage on the memory card. This data could then be transferred to a computer/laptop for processing and backup to other storage devices.
Do you have any information about this device?

Yes, I recall something like that as well. That being said, I suspect that since most people now have laptops and/or tablets, that the market for something like that may be getting smaller. However, I did a Google search and found this on the B&H site:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1790744-REG/clouzen_cl_tn0015_2tb_tainer_portable_all_in_one_backup.html/overview?
Oops! It is no longer available on B&H
Like I said, I suspect that the market for something like this is dwindling. I know I would never have a need for something like this. If I was ever in a situation where I needed to have additional storage and I couldn't bring my MacBook, I'd just opt for having a few extra SD cards with me.

And you are absolutely correct. Even at the high cost of XQD cards, I can purchase 3 120 GB cards for the price of the drive. However, I am limited to the number of cards I can afford to buy. Sigh! Why can't I have it all? LOL

Good dvice Bill, and I completely agree on the Samsung T7. Much faster than a spinning disk, more reliable (essentially shock proof) and small/light.
T7 is what I use on my MacBook and iMac both.
