I lived that. I was born 1951. What an awesome time to be alive. Life was wonderful back then. We have lost SO MUCH over the years. Just like the bible says. Thanks BE SAFE!!

Doesn’t everybody look back on the innocence of childhood as a special tome of their lives, and mourn its (inevitable) loss?

Unfortunately not everyone had such an innocent and special time during their childhood. Some had extremely unhappy and unsafe childhoods.

Those of us who had a time to look back upon with fondness should indeed be thankful!

We got so good with our bb guns (Daisy M25, Crosman 760, Crosman 140 pellet) that we could sit on the back porch and pick off flies that landed on the rocks, or "ring" the swing-set pole every time from 30 paces. Would set up army men battles and pick them off from the hill across the driveway, bb's kicking up dust like real explosions. Had 50 acres out back to play in, climbing trees, swinging on vines like Tarzan, hunting, camping; good times for sure.

That was my childhood from 70 years back. I could add that the neighbours did the same, and there were nearly always half a dozen or more kids to play with. I wasn't alone out there... and I never felt that I was not safe. I don't think things are the same anymore.

I got my first 22 when I was 13 (not sure how old, but was in grade school) and my first deer when I was 16. Currently in Canada, I think you have to be at least 18 to buy a rifle. Times were really different, and have really not improved.

The best times of my childhood were spent during school summer break on my grandfather's Illinois farm . Everyone as a child should spend time living on a working farm IMO - and experience the REAL world ! There was always work to do - but, as a child, everything was FUN !

I used to shoot a .22 behind our house when my parents were at work at about the same age. They were okay with it. I'm not advocating this in this day and age. It would probably get the SWAT team out, but it points to changing times.

I grew up in New York north Bronx. De witt Clinton HS. Had to take 2 sometimes 3 buses to get there. I could travel by subway at age 12 to downtown or anywhere in NY with almost no fear. There was a freedom of knowing that people in general were good people and would help a 12 yr or what ever in time of need.
