Thank you for your recommendations, your comments have been very useful. I have decided to allow her to use my photos without charging but will require that I be given credit for their use. Further, to insure that her web site loads quickly and that the photos are not stolen, I will provide them in a low Rez format.

This sounds concerning .... 'low res'. If you consider the site, even presented 'full screen', will likely never be on a screen wider than 2048-pixels, you just need to resize your images to that 'long side' at 2048px, using as low as 80% JPEG quality. Your friend might even know the exact maximum pixel dimensions of each possible placement of an image inside their site geography, where you could resize individual images to that exact size.

Examples of the resizing process are shown in screen captures at the bottom of the original post in this thread:

Recommended resizing parameters for digital images

I am an amateur photographer and yesterday a friend who has decided to create a web site to promote themself in a new venture asked me if I had some photos of the sounding area that she could use and that she was willing to pay for. I went through my Lightroom photo library and selected several expecting that maybe one or two would be useful. She came back requesting several that would be useful. My issue is since I have never sold any photos, what to charge. Any suggestions.

What Chg Canon said.

I had a friend, now passed away, whom I had to be careful in expressing my desire or admiration for some item, lest he would give it to me...mostly high end fishing gear. I think of him every time I drag in a big tuna.

I asked to borrow another friend's saw of some sort and he showed up with a new one at my house and said he thought I might need it over time and wanted me to have a new one!

Friendship is a rare and wonderful thing. Photos are a dime a dozen.

Go have a beer, let friend pick up the first round and you leave a tip.

I guess it depends in part on what you really consider a friend.

I never ask a friend for money whether it's for a photo, or to cut down a tree.

A true friend will repay you in some way over time, even when you don't realize it.

As for photo credit, that has to depend on how the photo is used.

IMHO

If you charge, you should get a vendor's license from your state. So you can then charge sales tax on your sale and file tax reports with the state on those sales.
Any thing less is illegal.
What you charge is up to you, when I started, I charged a minimal amount but wanted my photo credit on all images so I could use this as a starting point for my business.

If this happens once every year or so, it's not a business.......
More like a gratuity on the user's part.

If I sell stuff at a garage sale twice a year I should also get a "vendor's license" to collect and report sales tax?
ROFL....

It's a sale and must be recorded and sales tax must be collected. Otherwise illegal. Period. End of story. Book um danno.

Technically......

If you sell your old lawn mower to someone, are you going to collect sales tax and send it in?

Are you in the business of selling lawnmowers? If yes, then the answer is YES.

Garage Sales: Making a Loss
In the vast majority of cases, the selling price of items at a garage sale, no matter how precious they are to you, would not result in a gain that requires you to pay garage sale tax. This is true even if you have a substantial amount of cash in hand.

Although you, like tens of thousands of people who have a garage sale each year, will lose money on selling your everyday items, from the standpoint of federal income taxes, you do not have a loss. No matter how much you originally paid for your P90X workout program, when you sell it, you will likely get a lot less for it than you originally purchased it for.

What if instead, you use eBay, or Amazon? The same principles apply. If you sell an item for more than what you purchased it for, you are required to pay capital gains tax. If you sell it for less, you cannot claim that on your taxes.

What if someone is not "in the business of selling anything" but sells an item or three.
Maybe two prints a year, should they get a tax ID and collect and report sales tax?
You're going on the premise that the guy has a "business"...
Does he? Or is this a single occurrence of someone wanting to purchase some images for use.

Helps to understand the circumstances before jumping in with both feet, doesn't it.

For a rectangular image 600 pixels on the largest size and save at 72ppi. 72 ppi will display very well on a screen but will not print well at all.

Technically.

But then the underground economy still exists.
Until cash is no longer used........
They're trying to kill the underground economy on the internet by recording and reporting income from "non-business sales". Those places must now issue 1099-MISC forms to sellers if over $600 for the year.

I pay kids to shovel snow, should I be withholding income tax and sending it to the IRS???

1. They are willing to invest in your images for their money making website to... MAKE MONEY.
2. They offered to pay you for them!

Ask for specific web page sizing and put a figure together and negotiate, ask what the budget allows, especially for your post prepossessing, sizing and equipment investment.

All of this BS about being nice, or the benefits of the exposure of you images will only verify and stamp you as an eternal amateur.

See the opportunity for what it is and grab the bull by the horns.
