The rule is: take only photos, leave only footprints !

Catchy motto except in certain parts of Yellowstone National Park where footprints will get you a heavy fine.

I was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy in the 1970's. While serving on shore patrol we came across 5 US Navy types beyond drunk. They were displaying forms of debauchery on the side streets of staid old Victoria British Columbia.
We gave them choices.
They were not in favour of arrest either by us or their country's equivalent so they took door # 3 so to speak.
We got 5 taxis, found out the fare to get back to their ship, got that amount from each plus a handsome tip, paid the driver and placed each one in a separate cab.
A couple of days go by and we get called to our captain's quarters, he lets us read a secure message from the US captain expressing his sincere apology on the 5's behalf and $125 US to use for a good meal next time we were on shore leave.
Can you guess who paid up on the $125?
I guess those 5 didn't get the ,message referenced as to members acting as ambassadors when in a foreign country.

Like many other popular tourist destinations, Venice is having a tourist problem. The local population has declined to just 50,000, and tourists are outnumbering the locals. In addition, the huge number of visitors is causing excess wear and tear on the city. Venice has instituted a daily charge for visitors to help pay for the damage being done. This is turning out to be a problem all over the world, including our National Parks. People are accidentally and intentionally damaging ancient historic sites. A couple of women carved something into a wall of the Coliseum in Rome. Posting pictures of themselves online wasn't a smart move. Every popular tourist site is experiencing accidental and intentional damage from tourists. Stonehenge has been enclosed by a fence because of damage caused by tourists. I'm glad I was able to visit before the fence went up.

On the plus side, tourism adds billions of dollars to local economies, and it allows people to see and appreciate famous sites.
Like many other popular tourist destinations, Veni... (show quote)

Tourism is great for the local economy but has forced people out of visiting their own attractions, national parks in particular. We live under a couple of hours from Alberta's national parks but won't go during July and August simply because the places have been taken over by tourists. Even reservations in June and September are becoming hard to come by.

You should have slapped them silly before you put them in the cabs.

i'm here in (sort of) rural Vermont ... don't get me going on self entitled, self indulgent, self centered flatlanders (nope - that's not a compliment) who come up from "the city" (that would be NYC) and act as though they own everything and us rube, hick locals are there as their servants, and the rules of common courtesy are suspended at the state line.

niosy, ill- mannered and sloppy. they way they let their offspring behave is nothing short of criminal.

OK - that's the rant for today... sorry to "go off..."
