Follow the steps I outlined in a previous post in order. That will (1) run Windows troubleshooter (2)completely uninstall and reinstall the mouse (3) remove the precision setting and (4) resolve any conflict with the trackpad.

If that doesn’t resolve the issue, return and we can do so more in depth troubleshooting.

Ok.

Easiest first step is delete the mouse driver. Leave the mouse connected tho. Shut down computer, restart. Windows will look for the missing driver and should then install it. If it doesn’t, go to the muse/keyboatd web site, look for the driver there and install it. I would recommend not going to a ‘sponsored’ website. Check you are in the real manufacturers site.
Good luck.

Question. When I don't have a mouse, how do I move around to open the search, select the program and start the download?

Use the arrows on your keyboard. Sorry, perhaps should have added that to the flow but thought you would know that.
All the functions of your mouse are available on a keyboard, just a little less friendly.
That's how we worked before 'mice' were born.
Depending on your keyboard model, you might even find a little button between about G, H, and B. This will move your cursor around, just like the mouse.

You have given some very good advice and if she avails herself of it she should be fine.

A year ago my computer guru updated my Win 8 laptop to Win 10. I started uploading my programs to it and discovered that the cursor had gone awry. It constantly jumps and is impossible to get focused on anything. That made the laptop unusable.

I have an external mouse and keyboard on a USB wireless. I exchanged them, same problem. I unplugged the USB to use only the internal mouse. Same problem. I told my guru, and he merely grimaced and really didn't want to do anything. I asked a friend who gave me some steps to do, but unfortunately I didn't write them down and now I forget. It was something about uninstalling the mouse, shutting the computer down, rebooting and letting it look for new drivers to install. But I'm not sure of all the steps. Can someone give me detailed instructions in plain English?
A year ago my computer guru updated my Win 8 lapto... (show quote)

Several things that might help…

Check battery, check/clean lint from underside of mouse…

… and what TriX says is always reasoned/helpful response to problems

… also, is there another PC nearby that is interfering… I had that once… cursor jumping around and it was my wife using her mouse that was moving my cursor

Check your mouse. Check the optic on the bottom & make sure it is clean from any dirt, fuzz. If your mouse is battery powered, change out the battery(s). If issue is still present, then calibrate or try other steps listed below.

That shows conclusively that it's not the external mouse. Driver glitches is the most likely cause.

Yes, that's what I think.

Then downloading the latest trackpad driver from the computer manufacturer and updating it via device manager should address the issue. If that and the previous steps don’t resolve the issue, then uninstalling the trackpad, and removing the USB mouse with no pointing device installed would point to a HW issue if the erratic curser movement continues.

Is your drive activity light on the front of your case always on? Or, are you copying/moving mas amounts of files around? Copying files really tasks the system.

Well, if anyone is still paying attention, I've worked on this a bunch. It's better, but the cursor action is still jerky, not smooth. But I can get it to work - sort of. I had thought about doing the subscription LR on this laptop, but I'm not sure I want to with a jerky cursor.

Thanks for the feedback. Is the trackpad jerky with the mouse unplugged and what about with the trackpad uninstalled/disabled?

Today I got on with the external unplugged. It seemed to work pretty well. So I plugged the external back in. It still worked pretty well. I think for now I'm going to leave it be. Thanks for all your help.
