Aren't electric cars just great, I axe you ?
It was on the news the other day about electric vehicles not working because of very cold temperatures. I live in Northern New York, today temperature is only 5 at 2:06PM. I have being waiting for news about electric vehicles and cold weather. Back to drawing borad with the electric vehicles.

Worry not, the government will solve the problem.

Problems are due to drivers that don't know how to use an EV in a cold environment. EV's are very popular in Norway. They're exposed to low temperatures quite often, yet they do not have issues with EV's.

EVs are "quite able to cope with winter if you know what you're doing," Ståle Frydenlund, test manager for the Norway's electric vehicle association, told The Globe and Mail last year. "The challenge is teaching newbies how to do this."

Sounds like a quote from our government!
Yes, I live here and see the use of EV's every day
I don't own one but... I do question taxi drivers and ask for their opinion often. 99 percent positive responses, why?, because of cheaper hydro-electric and the charging infrastructure here.
I am a US citizen, see the differences, understand concerns, and question myself, but... again with distances of 500 miles, the performance gains, cost per mile (1/20th), and the fact that all charging stations are now universal, the future here and in Europe is obvious.
I myself see more promise in hydrogen cars, like California supports, but I also preferred Beta over VHS...
To the person who said EVs do not work below 0 F. That is NOT true!

Oh yes, electric-only vehicles are great.
IF people happen to live in locations where:
1. Daily travel is less than a hundred miles or so,
2. There are abundant charging stations,
3. The electricity employed for recharge: A. Did not depend on hydrocarbon sources, and
B. Would not potentially overload the power grid.
4. Pollution from ore extraction and processing weren’t hazardous, hydrocarbon intensive, and polluting.

Boy, there is a lot of bad news online about EVs. Fires are a real problem because they can start spontaneously. One house was destroyed when a Mercedes burned. The car was a loaner from the dealer while her own Mercedes was being serviced. Another house was severely damaged when a Tesla burst into flames. Water is useless for putting out lithium fires. Fire departments use special blankets costing $3k - $5k to smother the fire. They then haul the car away in a procession with police and fire engines. They leave the blanket on for a day or more to keep oxygen from letting the fire restart.
Sales are tanking, with dealers having EVs sit on their lots. Charging away from home typically costs more than filling the tank with gas. When many cars are charging from the same station, the amount of charge going to each car is reduced proportionally. A reported rented an EV to do a story on it. During a long trip, she said she spent more time charging the car than sleeping. The car got more "recharging" than she did. Replacing the battery can cost more than the car - $60,000 for a $55,000 Hyundai. Car makers are starting to produce their own batteries so they won't be at the mercy of battery makers. Still, with a limited supply of lithium, prices will continue rise. Reliability is an issue because the car is basically running on software, and you know how reliable that can be. Repairs can be ridiculously expensive.
I never had any interest in buying an EV, but now I'm dead set against them. Give me gas any day. (Enter a humorous comment here.)
A friend had an EV, but he sold it and bought a pickup truck. He didn't go into details.

I work at a local auto auction. Local dealers are paying us to store the KIA EV's they can't sell...sticker price $52,788
Most of the used EVs have very low mileages and do not sell going through auction. People get them then get rid of them soon after.
I can't imagine planning my vacation trip around electrical outlets

That’s because you’re not a lib
I can only speak for Teslas. Road trips are a piece of cake. Even a caveman can do it!

1. Ok, I’ll give you 100 miles although most EVs can easily do more than 100 miles.
2. I have taken numerous trips without ever being in danger of running out of juice. I live in Alabama, a state government and residents who are anti EV, and even we have plenty of EV chargers.
3A. Maybe the electricity came from coal - so what? I bought my EV because I love driving an EV.
3B. With the slow adoption of EVs, the grid is safe. Your utility knows what is doing as far as future power needs. That’s if the regulators and the Greenies will allow them to expand.
4. Really? Do you think manufacturing of an ICE does not require ore extraction, or is not hydrocarbon intensive, or polluting?
5. And I will add one more, I bought an EV because I love owning an EV. I’m not trying to save the world.
djstuel, I commend you for your honesty as to why you drive an EV. Too bad some other EV drivers aren’t as honest. They seem to gloat about how morally conscious they are compared to others at protecting the planet while ignoring where the electricity comes from or how the materials need for EVs are sourced. At least you appear to be aware of both sides.
Once upon a time before the GOP became a cult they would say let the market place make the decision. It will happen in this case again, There will be choices and it will be decided by our pocketbook.Battery cars and a better infrastructure will have to improve or there could be hydrogen powered cars, synthetic fossil fuel, natural gas or any number of new ideas and the market place will make the decision what works best. Like 100 years ago when it decided on the internal combustible engine.
