It's four lanes with lots of businesses and cars entering and exiting. Years ago, there were quite a few accidents. When the business section ends, the limit goes back to 55, too slow for you probably.

If you do 55 around Tx you just get run over. About 10 years ago on a trip to Austin I 'somehow' wound up on the troll road out of Dallas. A mile in, speed limit was 75, then 85, and I'm pretty sure I saw a Whatever speed sign. I'm pretty sure. Straight, flat. VW passat wagon, turbo 4 cyl, 5 speed, fwd w/ modified suspension. 120 was a very comfortable cruising altitude. Had easily more to go but didn't chance it.

The problem with the freeways, 45 No, So, 610 loop, 290 whatever, for example, was w/ 4 lanes of heavy traffic the flow would reach 50 mph. In about 5 ft. they would be going 15. Strong brakes and attention was required.

Never got pulled over for driving excessive. So no excuse was necessary just stating what happened. Oh, BTW during the 50's there were no speedlimits on any of the freeways in Nevada. It was not uncommon to drive 100mph.

I drove 100 mph (indicated) about three times, and that was enough. You're asking a lot from your tires at that speed.

Here in CA the CHP can get you coming and going while they are cruising.

The last time I got a ticket for speeding was in Ohio about 45 years ago. I never saw a police car until coming over a rise in the highway. I was waved over and fell in line with three other cars that had been waved over. When he got to me, I asked him how he knew I was speeding. He pointed to the sky and said "see that plane up there". He then explained the plane clocks cars between two white stripes across the highway.

Some people are ridiculous with the speed they drive. I always set my cruise control at 5 mph. above the speed limit and sometimes cars race by me like I was standing still. Why can't they simply put a gate across the road like they use in the fast lane of toll roads? The toll roads record the license plate # as cars pass through the gate. A record could be made of their speed and a ticket could be issued. This would free up police and troopers to handle more important issues.

In addition to speed, with the AI programs available today, they could also monitor tailgating and erratic driving and prevent some accidents due to driver awareness of this monitoring.

We had millions of people protesting the Vietnam War. We lost about 58,000 soldiers in that conflict over ten years. In ten years we will kill 250,000 Americans in traffic accidents. The deaths include infants, families, and people important to not only their families but often to companies and organizations where their knowledge is vital.
Where are the marches and protests against not having safe highways? While greater enforcement will not prevent all highway deaths, it could help reduce that number substantially.

In the 50 tire ranking were not and issue. But I agree with you. One a similar trip during the late 60 I drove a car with retreads. They could not take the heat and lost three of the four by peeling. Not speeding mind youl, just lost them because they could not take the heat.

I used to see more of those signs, "Speed Checked by Aircraft." Considering the cost of buying, flying, and maintaining aircraft, is it really worth it to time cars that way? And how accurate is it? Are there two people in the plane - one flying and on "stop-watching"? Ridiculous! Maybe they add a fee for the expense of the plane. In NY, most tickets come with a "surcharge" of about $100 that's sent to the state.

When I was a kid, I got a ticket for going 60 in a 45 zone - four lane divided highway, just moving with the traffic. I went to court and paid my $15 fine for driving 15 mph over the limit.

Sorry but they are valid and separate entities. Do you always have to be right?

I often see retreads from trucks lying on the Interstates. I wouldn't want to run over one of them. If I was driving a truck, I'd prefer retreads to regrooved tires.

Retreads are not a valid option when the temps get to be 115 degrees F. We have little options to but to buy new tires.

My Garmin GPS has that - very convenient. One road I drive regularly has 45 mph going west and 35 mpg going east for a short stretch, and the GPS knows that.

Just recently got a new Mazda. The dash center info screen has the speed for the road you are on in one corner of the screen. If you exceed the speed limit, it turns from white to red. Gets your attention. It especially gets my wife’s attention when I am driving. :-)

That must be built-in GPS. My Garmin GPS does that and lets me know about upcoming curves, animal crossings, school zones, etc.

Seen it with my own eyes on NY Thruway.... Trooper in a turnaround, facing traffic on other side of highway... Just around the curve going my direction were THREE troop cars and just further on were two more which had pulled over drivers. Seems like the trooper facing the "other way" actually had his radar pointing out the back window. At the time, I worked for a newspaper (cop beat) and asked a trooper if that was normal. He said "it's just one way of speed enforcement." He said it with a big smile...

I have a Mazda. You can go to systems settings and turn that off if you wish. You can also set it to give both a sound and visual warning or just a visual warning.

You got that right jerry - never buy a car without cruise control (and learn how to use it)

Thanks for the info. It reminds me to watch my speed especially on the freeways & toll roads.
