Buying Programs

Remember the good old days of the 19790s? When you bought a computer program, it came in a nice hard case with a manual and disks. Later, that became a download, with greatly reduced cost to the company. Lately, I've seen some programs that installed but didn't actually download. What happens when the computer fails, or I get a new one? Will I be able to get the program again without paying for it again? I can't recall what programs they were offhand, but I was surprised when there was no download. This is not a good trend.

How do they run on your computer if not installed there?
They could be entirely cloud based, but then you would be able to run them from any computer.

When I download a program, I run the installation file. Apparently, it's possible to install the program on my computer without installing the installation/setup component. This happened quite a while ago, so I'm not going to be able to remember what it was.

There may not have been an actual installation program, this is common on Macs, just drag the program to the Applications Folder.

Yea....

Years ago I had a neat Java Script web menu program module I bought.
No longer supported...
I deleted all the files.

Looking for something, and ran into a box with Borland Turbo C++, install instructions, 2 books re. Use, and a stack of (3 1/2” ???) floppies. Thumbed thru the largest book then threw the whole lot away… couldn’t be tempted since haven’t had a floppy drive in a long time.

One example of a program that still had a mail me a CD option for a long time is annual tax software. I gave up on the CD long ago… even after a cursory load it got on line and installed anyway… and updated on line regularly till (and sometimes after) I had submitted my taxes.

I have already submitted my taxes this year… and opted to have both Fed and state get my payments in April… have the UHH community submitted? Years ago a workmate tried to submit in March… and it was rejected… because someone had already submitted using his name and SSAN… and received a big refund with the fake $ data. When he tried to sort it out, the IRS 1st treated him as the crook.
