An observation that will most likely end up in the Attic but without my intent.

It sounds more like a local problem. Maybe the authorities don't like Wawa or the owner.

I was a bookkeeper for a rather high-end retail store. The owner kept assuring me that her customers wouldn't steal, but she could not explain the discrepancies we found in stock. She was quite annoyed that I made her do inventory frequently and she blamed the missing stuff on mistakes at the register. It was obviously not. Her refusal to even consider it almost broke the store. Maybe if store owners and law enforcement weren't so nonchalant about it, it wouldn't happen. Maybe if we didn't close our eyes to wrong, it wouldn't be so acceptable?

Shoplifing is a major cause of rising prices!

I was in a Wawa, (for those who do not know what that is, it is one of the new class of gas stations with 12 to 24 pumps and a store of about 8000 sq. ft. that sells enormous amounts of coffee, sodas, beer, snack food, and a kitchen that makes everything from salads to burgers, to pizza) a group of 7 or 8 kids from around 9 to 12 came in and left in about three minutes. A customer pointed out to the cashier that they had grabbed stuff and just walked out with it. Yea, the cashier said, it happens every day. The mayor and police know about it and won't do a thing. Please note: I did not mention the kid's color, the party affiliation of authorities, or anything that would be considered political. It is just an observation. I'm thinking more of the moral conduct of our society and how it seems to be crumbling.

There shouldn't be any question about where the breakdown of character, morals, and values lies.

Don’t forget the other part if you file charges against them you will have to show up in court and loose a day of pay. Plus you know how lawyers work they will get case canceled and you can miss several days of pay

I must have grown up in an awful area.

There’s a snip from Gavin Newsom’s zoom staff meeting where he tells about seeing someone walking out of Target without paying. He asks the cashier about it and she says ‘well, the governor…’

Eventually she realizes he’s the governor, but he has yet to realize what’s going on in his state.

I'm wondering why we haven't seen a resurgence of "catalog showrooms"? During the '70's & '80's we had several of them in our area. You went into a brick-and-mortar store and chose your items from counter catalogs (and many display items behind glass). They assembled your order and brought it to you in a cart from the secured warehouse area in the back... you paid and left. I could see many hybrids of this where you could order from home or order in the store. It would seem to be pretty adaptable to the parking lot pickup that grocery stores use as well. There would be no accessible merchandise but you would still have the advantage of checking your order before you left the store. ???
