I’m getting peppered with advertisements for ON1 Photo Raw 2024. Seems like it’s similar to Luminar Neo. Has anyone had any experience with ON1 and especially the 2024 V. yet? If so, how would you rate it and the learning curve, ease of use?

I have both ON1 Photo RAW 2024 and Luminar Neo. I like them both. They have similar capabilities, but their approach can be a bit different. I've taken to using them (ON1 more recently) than Lightroom and other editors.

I use ON1 primarily for my infrared work, but it seems like a super capable editor and the cataloguing is fairly intuitive.

I have both Luminar Neo and ON1 Photo RAW 2024. I've used both for many years now and each have their specific uses. ON1 is making a huge push toward being "THE" digital editor and asset management system that people might want to migrate to. It includes a tremendous number of filters and presets, and of course you can create your own. IMHO, I think their development module is better than Lightroom in that it offers more ways to process your images. I'm a fan....

I’ve used on1 photo raw for many years and it is great! The learning curve is not to bad and is similar to other editing programs. Give the trial version a try and see what you think.

I have been using ON1 for over five years now, when I threw up my hands and abandoned Adobe. To flatten the learning curve, get Scott Davenport’s (www.scottdavenportphoto.com) book. The ON1 2024 book has been released in PDF form, and the printed version is scheduled to be released by the end of February. The book includes instructions to download practice images. You can also book online private lessons for 1 to 4 hours, which in my experience was money well spent to flatten the learning curve. I found it hard to locate the private sections on his website, so just enter the word “private“ in the search tool, and it will come right up. Good luck with the editing software. I have been very happy with it.

I saw they were offering a free download during the month of January. I intended to get it, but forgot. Not sure I want to buy it, but if it's a good replacement for subscription products, I might. After all, I bought LR and PS!

I have been using ON1 Photo RAW for as long as it has existed, 8 years (2017-2024). ON1 is my primary editor, replacing Lightroom and Photoshop. I also use Affinity Photo. I have tried every version of Luminar starting with Luminar 2018 which was the first version that would run on Windows. I was disappointed in most of them, except for Luminar 4 and Luminar AI. I have tried Luminar Neo on my brother's computer and did not like it.

I recommend ON1 Photo RAW the most and I also recommend Affinity Photo in place of Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop Elements is also a good editor especially if you also get the "Elements+" add-on (it is only $12) to go with Elements.

I moved to On1 when Lightroom Classic went to SaaS pricing and because at the time Lightroom Classic catalog was easily corrupted. Since I teach Photoshop and Lightroom Classic that was a pretty big move. I have never regretted it. It allows you to use either a browser (like Bridge) or a catalog (like Lightroom Classic) for your image management. I would say it can do about 85% of what Photoshop/Lightroom Classic can do but if I need those features I can send images over to Lightroom Classic or Photoshop, work on them and bring them back to be managed by On1. They also give you HDR, panorama, focus stacking, resize, noise reduction and sharpening as part of the product. Some of those are on the map for this year to be updated. They also are very good at being honest and when they screw up they fix it. It is not perfect. For instance, its ML mapping isn’t as accurate as Lightroom Classic and Camera Raw but neither is any other product out there. By the way I use Affinity Photo to do most of my stacking as it gives me a better result. My workflow on those types of images is changing as the one bad feature about Affinity Photo is the stacks come out as tiff not DNG raw. In this case, Lightroom Classic does the best job and does create raw output.

I also have owned every produce MacPhun (original company) and Skylum has put out including Neo. I will not be giving them anymore money because they have proven to have a sales model that pushed incomplete and broken features that they never fix but rather just put out a new Product (not update) which still doesn’t fix the issues. Then in Neo they modified the sales model to sell you features that are part of most post processing software as Extras that you pay for. Generally when their features are compared against others they are at the bottom.

My advice is to send an email to help@On1.com to see if they will extend you the ability to get the 2023.5 product for free to try out. Or get a trial of 2024. BY THE WAY if you buy the MAX 2024 you not only get the standalone 2024 product but you also get plugins for it for Photoshop, Lightroom Classic , Affinity Photo , CaptureOne and others so you can use their features from your product of choice.

ON1 Photo Raw is nothing like Luminar Neo. I prefer Luminar Neo as a raw editor for my colour landscape images because I can bring out more details in the shadows. For most of my B&W images I use ON1 Effects 2023.5 as a plugin with Affinity Photo.

I own ON1 Raw 2024 (and previous versions) plus Luminar (all versions even under MacPhun) and Affinity 2. I have found the combination of ON1 and Affinity 2 covers all the basis for just about anything you want to do in photography. Luminar has turned out to be a sales focused source of software releasing products before their time.
See if you can still get the free ON1 2023.5 Presets (no, it's not the Raw version).

I have used On1 since its beginning and am very happy with it. IMHO, it does not have a very steep learning curve. I have found their tech support to be very helpful.. Why not download a trial and give it a try
