They put layer after layer of asphalt over the roads, and eventually, it's like a layer cake.

If it's anything like over here when they do re-lay a road (not rebuild - they leave the foundations underneath in a parlous state) they're planing perhaps as little as 25mm of the surface before the relay. This leaves the re-lay with no strength and it is easily ripped up by a 'torquey' motor. Sports car, electric, big truck, all will rip up a road more easily than if a substansial new layer was put down.

It used to be 100mm for a resurface but has been reduced ever since the days when people knew what they were doing.

Hey, man, how fast was he going! A rainy night on a road known for potholes ought to be enough of a warning!

Exactly! Night and rain on a back road. It was a deep, sharp-edged pothole. My son is a cautious driver. "known for potholes" applies to most roads around here.

Same here in Portland Oregon area. We had a severe ice storm a couple of weeks ago that lasted for several days. Any little Crack or pothole became exponentially larger. One huge pothole open on a major freeway and caused several bent rims.

Nor SHOULD poor or disabled (or military veterans or law enforcement retirees) be required to pay.

If EVERYONE (private individuals and corporations) were to actually pay taxes without exemptions or exceptions, we could get by with a lower income tax, rather than a National sales tax. Especially if any “wholesale” purchases by the wealthy could be eliminated, as well as purchases for vehicles, boats, planes, “luxury’ items, advertising &c., which are currently deemed “write-offs”.

I predict such all-inclusive legislation would NEVER pass the vested interests of those in Congress.

There would be an immediate hue-and-cry to carve out exceptions for various essential categories like food, fuels, medicines, or other “necessities”.
Nor SHOULD poor or disabled (or military veterans ... (show quote)

It wouldn't have to be so hard, but as you say, by the time all participants in the drafting of such legislature got their two cents worth in, it would be impossible to come to a final agreement.

The simple thing to do would be to continue to issue food cards to anyone who truly deserved or needed assistance. The card could trigger a reduced tax rate for non-food items or food items that were off the plan and required additional payment.

Some states have cards like that, but many people see them as cheating - getting something for nothing, as if food were a luxury. They even came up with a term, "Welfare Queen." It's true that some people cheat, but look at the other end of the scale. The benefits afforded to millionaires and billionaires are substantial.

Any system that could be put into place would be subject to some individuals gaming it. Just like not being able to eliminate shoplifting 100% Someone once said "Better to let 10 murders go free than to execute one innocent man". I think the same holds true with welfare. Although we all abhor dishonesty and cheating in our welfare system, it would be a worse travesty to let those in honest need of these programs go hungry.

I believe a better solution would be to divert some of the money spent on going after innocent people for petty issues to agents that investigate fraud in our programs and handing down stiffer fines up to incarceration for people cheating.

An example of what I'm talking about is a case in Ohio where a minister was charged with 18 felony counts for opening his church so homeless people would not have to sleep out in the cold. The complaint said the church did not have a permit for housing and there were no bedrooms in the church. Yet we allow illegal immigrants to be housed in hotels, given two years of apartment rent, offered medical benefits, and even allowed them to vote! I think I'll slip into Mexico and come back across as an illegal so I can get some freebies!

I've known so many people who cheat the system. Once on SNAP but when they got better employment and didn't qualify again but never went off the program. A coworker making $40k in the 90s bragged about getting free eggs, milk and other staples. In my opinion, that is reprehensible. Like workers making hundreds a week under the table. People making $50-60k never filing a tax return. 👿

I have been interested in having a street sign named after my 20 year old son who passed away suddenly. In spite of his many disabilities, he graduated college, learned to scuba and was an Eagle Scout. I was in the process of arranging flying lessons. He was very accomplished and completed all of his dreams and wishes except one. I went to the several politicians but the request was turned down. No reason given. Politicians have awarded others who have done little for the community. One man would sell fruit from his little store for 20 years. Another man had a clothing store for 40 years. Yet my son, did more in his lifetime than people do in theirs. Am I angry?
I am because city planning is very unfair. The condition of our roads is poor. I live and work in NY. Every few hundred feet is another pothole to avoid or ruin your car’s alignment. I drove over a pothole and it destroyed the tire. I repaired it and sued the city 7 years ago. I am still waiting for my day in court
It is pathetic that we are forced to tolerate slip-shod workmanship.

Sooner or later, the populace will revolt!
